Yes, and counties like Pakistan look to Ireland to excuse their own dangerous blasphemy laws.

Be great if this went all the way to court then we could all fall about laughing at the ridiculous joke that it is.

Quote:
While being interviewed on The Meaning of Life TV programme, Fry was asked what he would say to God if he had a chance.

“I’d say ‘Bone cancer in children, what’s that about?’ How dare you create a world in which there is such misery that is not our fault,” Fry replied. “It’s not right. It’s utterly, utterly evil. Why should I respect a capricious, mean-minded, stupid god who creates a world which is so full of injustice and pain?”

I think he truly had a right to say what he thinks, a lot of us think that way about a God that's went walk about, rather than a stupid one. Just a pity he picked a country that has Blasphemy as a crime. As said if this goes to court it will make Southern Ireland a laughing stock.

In fact his statement is a very interesting one, if one thinks about it, as it is far easier to  believe in the Devil's consorts controlling the Earth, via famine, war, suffering and injustice, rather than a God who turns a blind eye to all this.

Mind you if you believe in a Devil causing bad things on Earth, then surely there should be belief in a God, (Good verses Evil and all that), but as a lot of us ask, "Where is he when we need him?"

Maybe this is why many in the last two decades, gave up going to Church or Chapel. Mind you I still keep my KJV Bible, in case I have to clobber the Devil with it

The most fascinating part to me is the fact that the blasphemy law was only written in 2009.

Stephen Fry is an intelligent man, he also has tact. He has no questions for god.

It seems their 1937 constitution had blasphemy laws, and an updated version you mention was in 2009, which contained a new offence of "publication or utterance of blasphemous matter", against any religion.

Maybe Steven Fry is going to test their faith, which reminds me of the comedy film with Billy Connolly on 'The man who sued God'.

From Wikipedia...
Quote:
"In the Republic of Ireland, blasphemy is required to be prohibited by Article 40.6.1.i. of the 1937 Constitution. The common law offence of blasphemous libel, applicable only to Christianity and last prosecuted in 1855, was ruled in 1999 to be incompatible with the Constitution's guarantee of religious equality. The lacuna was filled in 2009 by a new offence of "publication or utterance of blasphemous matter", against any religion. The continued existence of a blasphemy offence is controversial, with proponents of freedom of speech and freedom of religion arguing it should be removed"

I oft quote my late father, who was born & raised in N.I.

Imagine there's a child, laying in a hospital bed, who will die in an hour, and two versions of god is standing over him;

One wants to save the child, but is unable. The other CAN save the child, but wilfully chooses not to.

The first god is useless, and the other is evil. Why would anyone spend hours of their life praying to either of them?

I happen to agree wholeheartedly with dear old dad, and if voicing these sentiments makes me a blasphemer, then string me up. This is 2017 for f***'s sake. The religious leaders of Ireland are responsible for so much misery over the years, and continue to be as such. Their word should count for nothing

I've formed a very similar view over the last 5 years, but with a few minor differences.

If someone believes in life after death and a higher power, and it gives them comfort, I'm happy for them. I really wish I could believe in that, but I can't for the same reasons I can't believe the moon is made of cheese. I'd like to have that comfort, part of me is slighly jealous of it.

As long as they don't start using it as an excuse to make other people's lives a misery.

But if I did believe in a higher power, I would be joining any crusade against it, because having the power to do something and doing nothing really is evil.

Or at the very least I'd stop buying God branded Coco Pops.

Well I believe in life after death, maybe not as the bible say, but yes, life goes on,

My upbringing was to go to Sunday school church and get the hand of God pushed into me with fear and dread, with one hellish brimfire Ozzy preacher.

Luckly my mother and father were not that strict on the subject of religion, as long as I did not marry a Catholic or then the wrath of my parents would be on top of me (forever). Funny thing was my sister and one of my brothers did marry Catholics, but waited till my dad died, and my mum was past caring.

Anyway, getting to the point about life and death, both my mother and father had a morbid  curiosity about kicking the bucket, and told of of us siblings that when they go they would let us know if life was there after death.

My father who worked as an electrician both on land and sea, said he would put the lights out in our houses when he died, and he did that in both my house in the UK and my sisters and one of my brothers houses in Australia, All other nearby houses were still lit.

My mother said she would use perfume, or fly as a white butterfly by the window  I cannot smell perfume very well, due to an earlier flue that destroyed some of my smell, so I got the white butterfly and my sister got the perfume smell lingering.

I also got a bonus with my favorite painting of the lake district over the fireplace being knocked 30 degrees at an angle, as my mother on a visit to the UK said she hated it. Typical straight forward talking by my mum.

So there you are, a story of loved ones telling  you of life after death in their own way, as mentioned to us.

If you check the internet many people get signs by their loved ones after they die. It makes it far easier if they tell you what they intend to do to prove it first, before they die.

Just so I'm clear, most of us are talking hypothetically right? In my mind Fry clearly answered the question as though "if God turned out to be real" had been added first. He wasn't being philosophical, he was trying to make believers question themselves.

And so he should, I'm sick and tired of religious types insulting me by knocking on my door and approaching me in the street, trying to make me question myself. By approaching me they have deemed me as needing 'saving'. Screw them and their judgemental proselytising.

They want to complain about a public figure trying to change the way people think? They bloody started it.
