Page 1 of So, my next travel idea :)

So normally in Vietnam now but been slammed with work and was trying to save for a mortgage which I now know i won't get so ion current rota for another month (at least) and have decided to do something that excites me......and that is a Music tour around the USA while it is still accessible ..

The plan now is to fly to LA....spend couple of days then get greyhound to San francisco....now is where i get excited, gonna get a 2 week train ticket, from SF to Chicago which is 3 days and amazing journey by the looks of it, then Chicago for Jazz....not quite sure how I'm getting to detroit for Mowtown but would like to do that, then Nashville for country, Memphis for Elvis, then New Orleans and maybe try to get to austin texas for some more country stuff......I have been looking while i am at work so pretty sure I will have missed a few so any ideas feel free to add them for me. Depending on time i will try to get unto NYC and atlantic city also.

Sounds like a funky time! Apart from the country music...

I have a few friends who have been to Austin, who said it was brilliant. Friendly ppl and saw really good bands in small bars :)

Ah thats good to know because i hadn't even considered austin till i spoke to the Pianist we hire here to play in the restaurant saturday night......:)

Very jealous. Am saving up for me and missus to visit California and Grand canyon next year.

Grand Canyon is amazing, it's just so huge. One day I really want to hike down and spend the night at the bottom, then hike back the next day. But it takes a lot of organising, and people recommend hiking down and getting a donkey ride back.

We are not so energetic for a hike into the canyon,  but the glass walkway is on my bucketlist, since i saw the 'making of' documentary, so this is a definite in our planned route.

Plus after these few years since built, it must be deemed safe to walk on by now :D

Booked my flight on the 12th last minute as job let me go week early, £240 single from edinburgh to SF and booked thomas cook from orlando to glasgow £280 and I'm wavering now on the 45 day rail ticket and just getting lost, already tweeted amtrak for some ideas, saw the rail docu on bbc with portillo headed to dodge so have added that already......cant wait :) will post some pics along the way :)

I haven't been on a train in USA, but my parents have, and said they were really good, so much better than here.

one funny anecdote I remember was as they were getting on the train, a guy got on with a McD bag, the conductor said to my parents, "he's going to regret that". On the train, my dad said the "buffet" car was more like a restaurant with reasonably priced food, that was really good!

I can't remember where that was though.

I remember seeing Insomnia, and looking at brochures in the travel agents for train trips up to Alaska, sadly the price put me off :(
