To be fair, I'm of the opinion that all new buildings (domestic or commercial) should come with solar panels included...

I'm still not convinced that the electric car is practical on your average terraced street or tower block, so not quite as optimistic for the take up.

I also wonder how long it will take technology to make it practical for those who have to spend all day every day travelling for their job...

They're starting to put chargers in lamp posts in suburban streets and it's still possible (and will be getting easier) to charge your car in the growing charging network. You don't necessarily need a driveway to own an electric car.

95% of people drive less than 15 miles per day so current electric cars are fine for at least 95% of the driving population. The latest cars will do 200-300 miles on a charge. You can charge a Tesla to 80% in 30mins on their supercharge network.

The biggest barrier to ownership is availability and cost and they will both improve significantly in the next 10 yrs.

And that might work in nice posh areas, but will it work for the common working class man or woman who may have youngsters or p***ed up adults passing by who will see the opportunity for a bit of vandalism?

Lamp posts in streets isn't going to work for tower blocks either.

This will need a big infrastructure upgrade to make it as viable as it needs to be, I hope it happens but not convinced it'll happen in the next decade in any real meaningful way.

"although nobody is willing to have a wind farm anywhere they can see it. "

I humbly beg to differ. Our local wind farm (26 turbines) is at East Guldeford, between Brenzett & Rye. I delivered to site when they were making the bases and it was fascinating to see the process in action. However, the location of the wind farm is on the amazingly large flat area south of the South Kent Downs that spreads from Rye to Sandgate, and the turbines can be seen from 30 miles plus from every direction. I personally love wind farms, from an aesthetic & engineering point of view, and think they're anything but an eyesore.

Apologies for the borked link earlier. here's the gist:

Quote:
President Donald Trump decided on Monday to slap tariffs on imported solar panels. The U.S. will impose duties of as much as 30 percent on solar equipment made abroad, a move that threatens to handicap a $28 billion industry that relies on parts made abroad for 80 percent of its supply. Just the mere threat of tariffs has shaken solar developers in recent months, with some hoarding panels and others stalling projects in anticipation of higher costs. The Solar Energy Industries Association has projected tens of thousands of job losses in a sector that employed 260,000

But it's been established that Trump has no understanding of how renewable energy works ("When it isn't windy, you can't watch TV"), and coal lobbyists helped/are helping his campaign financing, so it's patently obvious where his loyalties lie.

??? use the charging network then. There is more than one charging option. They are bringing chargers to supermarkets and workplaces. These will become commonplace. Petrol suppliers are doing tie-ins with charge providers to bring chargers to petrol stations - they know which way the wind is blowing.

It's happening. Clearly you are unaware of it. Whatever objections you can dream up, electric cars are going to replace ICE cars wholesale. And battery prices (the bit that makes the cars expensive) are falling fast.

In Norway 60% of all new cars sales are electric. In China they are producing a myriad of new electric cars brands - they are the biggest buyers of electric vehicles in the world. The countries that don't push the change to electric become the 'left behinds'.

Until fossil fuels are completely phased out of electricity generation, electric cars are worse than petrol and diesel. Electricity generation from fossil fuels is only 38% efficient. It produces less carbon to drill for oil, crack it in a refinery, transport the fuel to petrol stations, put it in your car and burn it there for automotive force and drive the same distance as an electric car. I think in the UK there are days where electric cars are worthwhile, but it isn’t a constant thing yet.

If we can encourage them to urinate on the outlets, we should be fine!
