I'm amazed this doesn't happen more often in this day and age:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/08/19/eddie_bauer_becomes_latest_retailer_struck_by_pos_malware/
Quote:
Clothing chain Eddie Bauer has admitted the payment terminals in more than 350 of its stores have been siphoning customers' bank card details to criminals.
The retailer... said malware infected its cash registers on January 2 and the code remained undetected for at least six months. The software nasty was cleaned up on July 17.
This might be related to how far behind the US is with chip-n-pin technology, article doesn't say.
But I'm not sure you can clone a CnP card from a single swipe like you can a magnetic strip. Though you'd get the card details and pin number from an infected machine that would let you make online transactions.
