Page 1 of US store chain Eddie Bauer infected with malware

I'm amazed this doesn't happen more often in this day and age:

The retailer... said malware infected its cash registers on January 2 and the code remained undetected for at least six months. The software nasty was cleaned up on July 17.
This might be related to how far behind the US is with chip-n-pin technology, article doesn't say.

But I'm not sure you can clone a CnP card from a single swipe like you can a magnetic strip. Though you'd get the card details and pin number from an infected machine that would let you make online transactions.
