Jury in Missouri awards $71m in talcolm powder cancer case

This has to be thrown out on appeal surely:

Quote:
A Missouri jury has awarded $72m to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer, which she said was caused by using Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder and other products containing talcum.

Cancer Research doesn't seem to think talc causes cancer:

Omg Does that effect female adults or female babies? I could remember me mum powdering me with a lot of that Johnson talcum powder.True so far no ovarian cancer but wandering if it could manifest to another type of cancer. Like I always says it sucks being a woman!

The point is there is no scientific evidence it causes cancer at all. So you are fine.

Dear agony aunt, my Wife uses talc to get a soft landing when diving off the top of the wardrobe, is this safe to do?

Thrown out of court on appeal:

The appeals court ruled Tuesday that Missouri was not the proper jurisdiction for the lawsuit. The court cited a U.S. Supreme Court ruling this summer that found there must be a strong connection between the plaintiff and a state where a lawsuit is filed. Only two of the 65 plaintiffs in Fox’s case live in Missouri.

Guess they'll have to pick a state with people less dumb to sit on a jury.

The problem with contracting cancer, is that it is very difficult to prove how you got it.

Unfortunately 38% (in the Westernised worlds) will contract some sort of cancer in their lives, so you will personally know someone who has it or who has died from it.

And the first question they ask is why me, and how did I get it.

One of my mates (same age as me) here in the UK has lung cancer, and has had to get a lung removed, and then kemo, and still waiting to see if it has spread, so its a possible death sentence hanging over him at the moment.

He does not smoke and has keeps telling me over drinks that he ponders over his life on how he contracted cancer, and has no idea. This is the problem.

We've learned a lot about what makes us live longer, a better diet, exercise, better health care, health and safety at work...

...which means a lot of people who would have died from cancer 50 years ago, died of heart attacks, organ failure and other things long before they'd have got cancer.

Everyone has a chance of getting cancer, all you can do is help to lower the odds. Doesn't mean you won't get it, and doesn't mean if you get it there was something you could have done about it. :(
