A brief explanation, or a link to one, for the less Nerdy amongst us would be welcome.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

Ta but I knew what it stood for just wanted a few sentences as to how it's different to now.
I thought that was what everything ran on already.

Just basically what's it on now and how does HTTP differ.

On a basic level if it stops any and all nosing at stuff I'll vote for it.

This site is obviously public, so things you post/like/etc aren't private, PMs aside.

But anyone who could intercept your traffic between your computer and the server, can track what pages you are visiting. They could also see your username and password that you log in with.

If we moved to HTTPS then your time here is as public or private as you choose to make it.

That's it really, it's not a major thing, we aren't exactly a home for muslim extremism, or oppressed resistance movements in third world countries.

There is a chance WinXP will be a blocker for this, in which case it'll be a choice rather than forced.

Does that mean I get a choice at my end or I'm unable to see the site once a choice is made.

Yeh, I think you better explain this further, as I am on WinXP as well, on all our computers.

You'll get a popup that you'll say no to. :)
