Kind of related, autopilot (where the user is expected to take over in case of an emergency) not a good idea (kind of obvious if you think about it for 10 seconds)...

This is just going to be automated death and carnage on the roads, when you rely on sensors that can go wrong or fail. We have already seen this sensor failure causing death.

Plus putting automation cars on the road in with the mix of humans driving is just madness.

As an Engineer, I know things can go wrong with machinery, if not today, then after a few years of use. A driver knows when their car is not working right and has the sense to sort it. Automation does not have the same all round senses.

I just cannot see why World governments want this big push into  self drive cars, other than do away with millions of driving jobs.

As an engineer, you should realise that humans are way worse than machines when it comes to getting things wrong. :)

The problem here is we all feel we are safe and less likely to make a mistake than a computer, and on an individual basis there may even be some truth in that. But we are all also more likely to make a mistake.

Not sure about that Rob. Sure, computers can do so many things quicker and better than humans but there are still many things where the human brain is way, way ahead.

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

I agree, for lots of things we are way beyond them, but reaction time wise we can't compete. We are also awful in comparison at any repetitive task.

I know, really off topic, but it's sort of about driving

SAN FRANCISCO — A woman in Tempe, Ariz., died after being hit by a self-driving car operated by Uber, in what appears to be the first known death of a pedestrian struck by an autonomous vehicle on public roads.

Saw that on Sky news earlier today,

I wonder how many fatalities will be required before we realise sensors failing to detect on self driving cars, Kills.

I don't think they've said what the cause of the accident is yet?
