I'm generally more concerned with how it tastes than how much it costs. You can pick up a perfectly palatable bottle of red from a supermarket for very little if you're willing to try a few different wines. Most weeks I can pick up an enjoyable bottle for £5 or less. Admittedly they've usually been reduced from £7/£8, but they seem to be permanently on offer so it's irrelevant.

I think that's what my father in law does, he knows a bit about wine, generally spends about £5 on something reduced, avoiding French as he says that's overpriced. I think his preferred is a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon.

when he worked he travelled round the world so I think he got to try a lareg varierty from different countries before every Tesco had wines from around the world.

I forget which country some guys from work went to recently, Moldova I think it was, but they went to some vineyards, and cellars there, and brought back as much as they could, as they said they were paying a couple of quid for bottles which would cost a lot more than that here.

Snobism and Emperors new clothes must come into it as well. Recently I went on a client visit, and we were taken out to a private members club, the owner had a new wine, I forget what it was, but everyone was raving about it, I wonder what would have happened if the 1st person has liked it, the 2nd not ;)

It's interesting that video mentions the "experts" liking the complex ones, and the "plebs" the simple ones. Reminds me of the time I bought a wine, I liked it, my dad descibed it as vineger, as it wasn't Asti Spumante :)

I should add, I'm no expert, I know roughly what I like, but no undertones of this and that, so sounds like I should stick to fiver a bottle as well :)

I drink a lot of red wine.  There's definitely a lot of truth to the article (it's nothing new really) - but it's true to a point.  Wine, like lots of other things depends lots on mood and how it's served.  You can serve the best wine too cold for example and it'll taste awful.
The point above about cheap wine abroad isn't quite a like for like comparison though.  Wine over here at a certain price, has to be cheaper at source - before 3 or 4 links in the chain have all taken their cut.
Although the point of the article is really that expensive wine is often maybe not better than cheaper wine (like other things it's often the law of diminishing returns) - when you come the other way, a really cheap bottle of wine can, and generally is, awful.
Nothing wrong with fiver bottles of wine.  Some great deals around at times (I've usually got around 100+ bottles in) from some supermarkets.  Tesco often have great deals with wine at half price and then they do 25% off if you buy 6 or more.  It's often good wine that often is at the upper price point too.
Personally, I love Australian red.  Dislike French wine.

While working on a building site at the moment in inner London, I notice that the in drink at night for local residents, going by the empty bottles we have to clean up in the morning around the site, is Buckfast wine

I prefer my grape juice pre-rotted.

I don't mind French wine TBH, although more often than not I go for Chilean or Australian as that's what's on offer. A lot of the 'new world' wines are quite spicy, which is nice. I buy from ASDA more often than not as they're cheaper than Tesco etc for the same stuff.

The last few weeks my regular wines haven't been discounted, so I've been getting a Southern Point Cab Sauvignon for £4 (reduced from £7). It's a pretty mellow wine that goes down well after a week at work.

I used to go for a Castillo or Berberana Tempranio, but they haven't been on offer lately. Occasionally go for a Rioja when I'm in the mood. I used to drink a lot of Shiraz/Merlot, but my tastes have changed recently.

Not something I've ever noticed tbh.  They never do buy x bottles and get a percentage off either.  We shop at Asda - but rarely buy wine there.  Online Tesco delivery all the way.  I really don't think you can beat that sort of deal (Sainsbury do it too).  You can get some great deals on McGuigan when they have deals on - especially the times when it's already on sale.
Quite a few wines now seem supermarket specific.  I don't think you can get Southern Point in Tesco?  I don't mind South African at all - not really keen on USA wine though.
Maybe we need to post some deals in the bargain forum when there's something good on....

I don't tend to buy in bulk for fear of drinking it. I usually just buy the one on a Friday and, mood depending, it's either gone by the morning or Sunday.
