Facebook's new track-you-anywhere privacy policy

the new policy allows the website to gather data about you from across the internet, including online searches and details shared with online retailers. A Facebook spokesman explained: "It takes into account pages and places visited on Facebook, alongside browsing on the internet at large."

I'm sure they were mostly doing that anyway.

I have noticed that whenever I post a status update on my phone, it automatically posts my approximate location without me physically requesting it to do so.

On the plus side, they've re-integrated the messenger service without having to install that privacy-eating standalone messenger app instead

I do not belong to any social media network, because of too much private information exposure.

But...

I find cookies just as bad, as if I look at say a car on Ebay, then for the next few days on other webpages, I see adverts alongside with the actual car make I was looking at.

This hidden stalking of advertisers must make a drain on the computer itself on the internet. So much for speeding up with broadband, as all it seems to do is collect info on what your watching, and put up ads specific for you. Creepy!

Get Ghostery, don't get tracked:
https://www.ghostery.com/en/

The only load your computer is suffering will be from adverts, they'll get served regardless of cookies.

hmnn ghostery seems to require some config to be able to still browse the web how you may want to, without being tracked, think I'll stick with adblockplus, which I guess doesn't do so much.

I found ghostery was problematic on sites like hotukdeals, stopping me from going to the deals when I clicked on the link from a deal, even allowing hukd didn't always let me go to deals :(

wasn't just there, searching using google, then couldn't go to some of the resulting pages.

Also looking at flights on an airport site was fine, but when i clicked on the flybe link to go to their site to see details, it got blocked :(

maybe I need to rtfm ;)

what I do is have different browsers for different things, a bit of a pita but I'm used to it now.

chrome is just used for dvdreviewer, facebook, twitter and one or 2 other sites with log in details, not surfing,.

ff is used for general surfing, with privacy mode turned on, so when I close it, all saved data, cookies etc is cleared out.

Yeah it's annoying that some sites don't work unless you work out what is blocking them in Ghostery.

But I prefer to use that than adblocker, because I don't mind seeing ads (Firefox blocks Flash by default, so I refuse to have Flash ads ruin my cpu) and I feel they should get something for the free content they are giving me.

It doesn't help when you get sites like ebay who already make money out of you fill it with adverts for external sites. It's like when you buy a DVD and have to sit through ads before you can watch the movie you paid for. :(

Good thing, I hate when people talk while watching TV.

Facebook has been ordered to stop tracking web users without consent by a court in Belgium.

Using its tracking scripts, cookies, plugins, invisible pixels and Like buttons, Facebook collects information about everyone who uses the web Facebook users and non-users alike.

Now a Belgian court has ruled that it must stop tracking web users who have not given their consent for this behaviour or face fines of up to €250,000 per day for non-compliance.

Let's hope they comply.
