Hillsborough - 25 years on.

I don't know how much coverage the Hillsborough 'story' gets around the country but as we near the 25th Anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy I just wanted to say a few words.  I've been very careful lately (as have all of the online publications/podcasts I listen to) to respect the wishes of the Attorney General and say nothing at all that could in any way prejudice the case.

The chance for the families to finally put personalities and characters to the name or names of their lost, loved ones is about time and so long overdue.  Each and every one of the 'pen portraits' so far are just heartbreaking and just make you realise just what these families have been through over the last 25 years and still go through each and every day.  The tragic waste of lives from young fathers dying and leaving a young wife, still pregnant with his child to the parents losing their only two daughters, it's heart wrenching indeed.
I've shed many tears over the years and many recently too.  I'm sure the match on Sunday will be no different.  The delayed kick offs around the country are fitting tributes and marks of respect for the victims.  I think Manchester City have a tribute planned before the game too.  The permanent one at Goodison too is a great gesture.

When the original verdicts were finally quashed and it was agreed to release previously unreleased documents many questioned (even on here) what could be gained by the actions.  I'm not sure many who weren't close to the situation could have comprehended just how deep and shocking the whole attempted cover up was.

Hopefully, the real quest for Justice has started now.

RIP 96, You'll Never Walk Alone.

I've just been reading the Bruce Grobbelaar interview on the BBC website. Must admit it brought a tear (or two) to my eyes.

Was this a 'Kennedy' moment for everybody?

I know where I was and what I was doing whilst this unfolded on the radio.
House hunting, well south of London and still unmarried.
Since when I've married moved up to Liverpool and now have two daughters and a son 22, 20 and 18.
Three lifetimes that weren't even thought of when 96 lifetimes ended.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

Certainly was. Quote:

Exactly.  25 years waiting, desperately trying and looking for justice is painfully long.

Eerie scenes in Liverpool today.
Touching speeches from both LFC and EFC managers and huge acknowledgement and respect for what Kenny Dalglish did at the time and since.
Noticed the acknowledgement of the AG  request in the Grobbelaar article (With new inquests into the tragedy under way, we cannot describe what Grobbelaar saw for legal reasons.)

After the longest inquests in British legal history, 96 fans at Hillsborough were unlawfully killed. Official.
It's been a long time coming but justice has been done. It's still not possible to imagine what the families have been through.

A quite depressing list of errors that contributed to their deaths. :/

So, the official criminal charges announced today and six face charges about their involvement in the disaster.
Duckenfield facing 95 charges of manslaughter by gross negligence and others face charges relating to lies, perverting the course of justice and changing witness statements.
Again, I'll refrain from saying more that could be perceived to prejudice the case, get the site in trouble or cause any cries of 'It wasn't a fair trial.'

RIP 96.

Good, criminal charges should always follow where the law appears to have been broken, no matter who it is potentially in the dock...
