Google seems to be ruining YouTube

RJS (undefined) posted this on Sunday, 15th December 2013, 19:17

I'm not a content maker on YouTube, I'm a viewer, so at first when they changed all the comments so they were Google+ integrated and content providers started moaning about them, it didn't really affect me that much.

But I did see a lot of vlog posts from people on channels I subscribe to moaning about that change, and it made sense why they would be, as it effectively reduced their ability to interact with their viewers.

And then last week YouTube turned on some auto-copyright system that scans videos for copyrighted material and then if it detects anything disables any revenue the poster gets for those videos and redirects that income to the copyright holder.

Which has really hit a lot of people who post game reviews, since those reviews contain excerpts of the game, and suddenly they aren't making much money out of these reviews. And the only people who actually could claim any copyright on this fair usage, like the game publishers, are saying they aren't making these claims and they actually think these posts are great advertising for them.

I really sympathise with the content providers over this, and quite a few seem to be jumping ship to other platforms, or reducing their output. And when it's an avenue for creative people who are really talented but no TV station would ever give them a chance to produce content, this kinda sucks!

Dan Bull says it best when he points out how things have gone from a system where copyright holders have to prove they have the right to exert that right, to one where anyone accused has to prove they have the right to use it, making people guilty until proven innocent.

I thought it was bad a couple of months ago when I recieved 2 warnings from YouTube. The first was a video of me shaving my mates head in the back garden with Hello Vietnam from FMJ playing in the background, the second was a video of my mothers African Grey singing along to Ollie Murs Troublemaker.

The Google copyright algorithm is a mess without context. If I was reposting the original music videos then I'd fully expect my upload to be flagged, but I fail to see where my videos could have caused anyone any harm.

It'll be interesting to see What Google do now. Both the PS4 and Xbone have share functions that are sure to integrate with Youtube as the operating systems mature, and the industry wants us uploading gameplay videos. YouTube played a massive part in bringing COD online to the masses. From seeing the original Modern Warfare MP being played, I've bought that and every COD since, occasionally on both consoles.

They do seem to be in the process of completely ruining it. Ah well, after enough people jump ship to Vimeo or whatever I'm sure they'll have a rethink. Google has clearly gotten too big for its boots these days.

It was their lame attempt at challenging Facebook in the social media market, but it's just so unwieldly and well, crap, that no-one wants to use it, and forcing the customer base to use it against their better judgement is just going to put everyone backs up

Its bad enough with the youtube music copyright, as if it detects just a few known chords, or even similar to a few known chords, it says its copyright, and there is no arguing with them, as their arbitration is crap.

I have been using bought music maker programs that create your own music now, for the last few years to create background music for my posted videos to avoid copyright. Yet last week I posted a video with my own made music and it said it was copyright to some Crazy unknown (to me) German Heavy metal band, what? The music on my video was not even heavy metal. So had to change it yet again.

If what they are talking about having visual copyright being next, then that's the end for posting of videos on youtube.

Apparently Google sent out a very unapologetic email to content providers, which did the classic politician approach of, "we need to be better at getting our message across" rather than actually changing what they are doing...

I wonder if this is how SkyNet starts...

Quote:
Back in December Terry Cavanagh, developer of VVVVVV received a strange message from Youtube; they’d taken down the trailer for his game because they said it infringed on copyright for a song he owned. An odd mistake for Youtube to make but they’re a huge company and mistakes are made.

Cavanagh filed an appeal.

A month on and Youtube responded, rejecting his claim.

The latest thing now with youtube is that it has taken the link out of getting to your own INBOX.

This allowed you to see messages going direct to youtube, and not google+.

If you want to see your own INBOX now the its....

http://www.youtube.com/inbox?folder=messages&feature=em-message_received

This means that google is trying to force everyones comments going through google+, and if you decide you do not want to be in google+, then they force you to leave Youtube.

This is pure virtural dictatorship.

The other major problem is google+  keeps trying to force you to use your own real name on youtube, but I would leave both first, before that, as many people like to remain anonymous on the internet and use a made up name.

MARCH 2014........Once again Google is messing with Youtube.

When you log in, instead of giving you a choice of accounts,  now it automatically sets you up with your google+ 'real' name account, instead of your youtube name. (assuming they are different).

You then have to go in and switch accounts to reset your youtube name.

This is the slow march towards google trying to get everyone to sign in with their real name on all google bought websites.
