Are wraps different (better) than bread?

r8sso (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 22nd June 2011, 22:26

I`ve been trying to cut back on the amount of bread I eat (mainly lunch) as I`ve been getting tired in the afternoon and I`ve heard bread gives you a bit of a come down after an initial high, so thought I`d try wraps at lunch instead.

I`ve done a bit reading on this online and there`s mixed opinions on whether bread is `good` or `bad` for you!  Some saying wholemeal is good, others saying the body can`t digest this long life stuff etc etc...

Has anyone on here tried going without bread for a time and did they find a benefit?

To finish, I LOVE bread!

Wraps still have carbohydrates in so would have thought still give that bloating feeling but need to eat more of it :/- but really no idea. Be interested to know.

When i cut back on bread I feel so much better at first. But i think i have a wheat Intolerance - but I LOVE BREAD TOO :D, so can't live without it for long.

a little bit of everything in moderation is good :D

I don`t think it`s the carbs that are the problem with the high then low feeling I get with bread.  I think it`s cheap white bread has lots of sugars in it so you get an initial pick-me-up but then you start feeling drowsy once your body starts digesting it.

I`d like to know if me feeling `better` after eating wraps all week is a placebo effect or due to what`s in the wrap - I`ve know idea if the ingredients in a wrap are massively different to bread! :)

Wraps are unleavened bread - no yeast.  It`s more likely the novelty of eating them making you feel better, unless of course you`re gluten intolerant.

Frankly, your best bet is to regularly change the kind of bread you buy - get a wholemeal loaf one week, white bread the next, and try different manufacturers.  Find the bread(s) that you like the best, and eat them in moderation.  Baguettes and French Bread are good for your teeth (and being chewy take longer to eat so you get more eating time for the volume).

Bread`s the devil`s work.
I try to avoid it where possible.
Unless it`s a peshwari nan. man I love them.

Chappatis with my curry instead of rice now, my Indian mates at work got me on to that.

I`m with bowfer on the Peshwari Naan though - amazing.

Just decided to get a curry tonight now! :)
