Costco for me.I was in Costco on Monday night and remembered someone saying the pies were good when I saw them stacked up.
I almost had them in my basket when I saw they had alcohol in them :( (whisky iirc but don`t quote me on that)

had a normal tesco one the other day, that was ok
M&S luxury all butter deep filled today, that was very nice, port and sherry in it, but didn`t taste of alcohol
lol, just noticed this. Not sure if they have any alcohol in them - certainly not strong - I hate anything like that where they put whisky, brandy, sherry etc. in - like the `premium` ones.
Not had them this year but last year they also had a kind of very light sponge on top too - great with a brew.. :)

Costco do TWO types of mince pie!
The ones I saw before with the alcohol in them in a nicely packaged box, and the (I believe) ones you describe here in their Kirkland cardboard-tray-covered-with-cling-film type packaging!
Quite large, thick but soft pastry, just "enough" filling and a spongy bit on top.
Yeah... I bought `em last night ;)

this year`s first of the season was a homemade one. in the hospital foyer last week there was a stall set up for a charity to do with the hospital, home made mince pies and shop ones, cakes etc for sale, 2 home made almond meringue topped mince pies for £1.00, so I bought 4, wish I had got more but seemed a bit greedy to buy all of them :) Whoever made them did a great job, they were excellent :)
this week bought some Asda in store bakery, also v nice, had 1 with custard the other day, 1 with dream topping yesterday. Never done mince pie and dream topping before but it`s a good combo :)

bump :)
a new M&S Food store opened up near work in the Summer, I walk past it from where I park my car to get to my office, so I popped in the other day to get my first mine pies of the season. the box didn't last long when I got to the office :) I got the M&S The Collection one, £2.50 for 6, so not cheap, but damn fine :)
Opposite the office, there's a Sainsbury's so that lunch time, one of my colleagues popped across to get a pack of fresh from the bakery, puff pastry mince pies. the pastry was good, but M&S filling had spoiled us, so these were good, but not as good.
Today had the Sainsbury's Shortcrust Pastry from the bakery, again, nice pastry, but shouldn't have started off on the M&S ;)

I'm with Ste.
Just a shame I can't eat them anymore, diabetic. :-(
Pat-w, did you see the breaking news on type 2 diabetis using a liquid diet.
