Radio 4 Comedy Series

RJS (undefined) posted this on Friday, 8th October 2010, 11:27

Over the years Radio 4 has had some great comedy on it, some of which I`d put up there with the likes of TV classics such as Faulty Towers, Red Dwarf, and Father Ted. The fact I`d found some of them by accident makes me wonder if there are some I`m missing out on.

Here are the ones I`ve absolutely loved and listened to over and over:

Cabin Pressure
Elvenquest
The Masterson Inheritance
The Boosh
On the Town With The League of Gentlemen

Anyone got any suggestions of things I`ve missed? I guess I`m interested in sitcoms rather than things like I`m Sorry I Haven`t a Clue and The News Quiz.

I rather like Bleak Expectations. I think it`s another one that`s soon to be ported over to telly.

Heard good things about Listen Against - though not actually heard it... if that makes sense.

off the top of my head

Old Harrys Game - about the devil
Revolting People - revolutionary America
Absolute Power - with Stephen Fry. Was made into a tv series. This was a spin off of the comedy thriller series In The Red, In The Black and In The Chair.

I agree completely with Rehan`s list, plus I also enjoy To The Manor Born, all the old Steptoe and Dad`s Army stuff, and Hancock, plus After Henry which starred Prunella Scales and Joan Sanderson.

This is why I`m such a Radio 7 addict!

Edit: Oh, and you have to have a bit of Marcus Brigstocke with Think the Unthinkable and the Giles Wemmbley-Hogg series. Absolute crackers!

Oooh yes, I quite like the Dad`s Army and Hancock`s Half Hour, plus Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister, didn`t really count those (apart from Hancock) in my list simply because they were remakes of the TV series.

Radio 7 is great!

Have seen Old Harry`s Game on iplayer but not tried it, will check it out as I do like Andy Hamilton.

New series of ElvenQuest is apparently being recorded or just been recorded, and Cabin Pressure Series 3 is being written for broadcast next year.

Try Ladies of Letters with Patricia Routledge and Prunella Scales.

Snaps

Every Third Car

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

I was trying to remember Ladies of Letters but couldn`t quite recall its name. Robert, you MUST listen to Old Harry`s Game - it`s brilliant!
