What has become of DVD Reviewer?

Zvi Josef (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 17th November 2007, 09:16

Hi, guys.

Been here for as long as I can remember (over 7 years now), but never thought the site would come to this - no more visitors reviews and WAY too many Anime reviews. It seems most site reviewers` reviews are now Anime. Why???

I miss the way things used to be around here, and would be glad to hear what you think about it.

Cheeers.

We review what we`re given and it would seem we get a lot of anime discs, which keeps Jits happy at least. We also regularly review UFC and WWE discs, again down to the PR agencies recognising the expertise here. The rest of what we get is a good mix of titles, but not too many of the high-profile film titles (which normally only get the studio name burned through the middle of them). I personally am happy with the mix and I would venture that Jits is in danger of anime overdose, but at least he`ll die happy.

You have to remember that most of us work for a living and this is a voluntary `job` so reviewing is done is spare time and therefore we`re not reviewing as quickly or as much as we`d like to. I personally have about 40-60 discs that I haven`t even watched yet after buying, and I doubt I`m the only one in this position (not that I need sympathy).

Can`t tell you why there aren`t enough reader reviews, I started there myself, but maybe more people come here to read the reviews than write them. We have a fairly active forums as well, and it seems sometimes that the two are separate entities for a lot of our regulars. That`s frustrating, but hey...

And those who laugh will surely fall,
And those who know will always feel their backs against the thin wall...

Have to admit I probably fall into this catagory - although I do occasionally check out the reviews more often than not in the forum part. But is that a bad thing? I think not as I feel we have a good forum community going on here which I feel is important - and we unusually don`t get bombarded with one post ponies who try to upset everyone else which you do get on other sites.

Not necessarily a bad thing, but more frustrating when someone asks about a release and we`ve already reviewed it...

is that not what the `search for` facility is for?

That`s "One post poniesTM" to you. Woo Hoo. I have invented a word that has passed in to common usage. Well one person.

I am also in that group of people that never read reviews. I will get a film and make my own mind up if I like it or not. I don`t need someone to tell me whether I will like it or not.

Yes, but you know people never use it. It`s the same for just about every forum you visit.

I kind of agree with you on this, but you talk to people about various films, comment in threads about them, don`t you? Therefore you are reviewing and listening to people`s reviews. You may still ignore them and watch something regardless (which is nearly always the best policy) but the review is just a formal version of this. It`s still just someone`s opinion though...

Well, my intention was NOT to say that I dislike the forums here. On the contrary - I find them very useful.

It`s just that I LOVED the reviews` section of the site, the way it used to be, at least.
I even contributed almost 600 reviews of my own here, but, alas, since no-one of the site`s managers/owners can upload requested titles anymore, I cannot review them. Hence my frustration.

When I had something to contribute to the forums` section - I did it, but I still prefer the good ol` reviews` section, where people could (and still can, but don`t) express their thoughts about titles, less content-wise, but rather video and audio quality stuff.

:)

Actually we can, but Rob`s a little busy at the moment with something else. If you want any titles adding then drop me an e-mail, but only one or two at a time, yeah?

Bear in mind, that if you want this doing, then it would be better if you researched all the items needed to set up the discs as well such as tagline, price, running time etc...
