Washing machine problem

strangest (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 30th July 2007, 07:08

When I moved into my flat the couple who moved out left their washing machine for me. They explained it had a few problems but they could be overcome, but at least it washed my clothes. Then it stopped taking fabric conditioner and one day the machine filled with water. The machine wasn`t on a programme it was just left with the door shut. I noticed a puddle on the floor so I opened it to look inside. The drum was totally full..oops. Since then I`ve been doing my washing at a friends house until my Dad offered to buy me a new machine. The new machine arrived on Saturday so I gave it a whirl(pool). Everything was great, then my flatmate told me that water had been leaking from the open door. The drum had filled again. This makes me think its not the machine but the inlet hose. I thought the machine only drew the water when it needed it so why would it fill the machine when its not being used ?
Help me please.

Pretty much. We had the same problem with an old hotpoint. What was happening was the limescale in the hard water was siezing up the inlet valve, meaning the water just flowed into the machine when it wasn`t being used. Got through 4 valves (Over an 18-month period) before we decided to get a new machine when we moved house. So it could be that you`re in a hard water area, or that the inlet valve has just siezed. They`re pretty cheap and easy to replace yourself, Just make sure the water`s off before you disconnect the pipes :p

Another thing to Check

Is the Outlet Connected to a Standpipe or to the U Bend under the sink

If it is Connected to the U Bend make sure that the Water being drained from the Sink is not flowing back into the Machine ....lift the Pipe so that it goes Up before dropping down to the Machine

I had a Machine that kept filling up when not in Use and the above was the Cause
