If your picture/gif is at (say) www.my_website/my_picture.gif (that is open or visible to all others) then you need to enclose the url with [ img ] [ /img ] control characters

For the above example, it would be

[ img]www.my_website/my_picture.gif[ /img]

I think you have capital letters for IMG and the "/" was outside the brackets. There must be no spaces in the brackets
