Definitely interesting.
Could be great, could be awful (for gamers and devs).  All depends on the monetisation model I suppose..
Everything important about the announcement pretty much missing though.
Pretty sure also that initially it's not 'any device with a Chrome browser' as far as phones are concerned - it's Google's Pixel devices.

So, the games aren't installed on your own PC/Mac Atari 2600 or whatever, and you play them by interacting with a server somewhere over a high-speed connection, along with, eventually, hundreds, if not thousands of other users all hitting the same servers at the same time.

On what planet would that ever possibly work?

Related: I play GTA online almost religiously (Pc, same username), and some days I'll barely take a few steps before the server burps and 25 other players are dumped out (from my point of view) and I find myself in a solo public lobby. Sure I can get more work done, but it's bit tedious selling $250,000 worth of guns & ammo with no-one else in the lobby to get the bonus up. Point is, that's Rockstar, who currently hold the acclaim of having the most populous online user base outside of Fortnite, and even their servers struggle at the best of times.

If anyone can make this work Google can.  Their knowledge and expertise in data centres, scaling and performance is right up there with the industry best.
Think of it almost as streaming video to you that you interact with.  The processing is all done on server farms, the power of which are mindblowing.
By far the biggest hurdle will be the pricing.  Initally thought of as almost a Netflix of gaming this is nothing of the sort really.  You pay a subscription and then ON TOP, buy the games.  I think Red Dead Redemption II (year old game) is £54.99!!
Some games will probably not work as well as others but this can only get better too as ping times and latency are reduced even further.
Certainly not a great advert for it above but there have been some pretty good ones too.  Not the promised functionality available at launch but what's new I suppose...
Not forgetting too that this isn't just a PC/Mac thing - these games will be playable on phones, tablets etc. in great graphics - pretty much in a browser window!

I never want to play games this way, and games like FPS and driving are going to be terrible with any input lag at all. And there is no way not to have any input lag at all, physics is against you.

But there are lots of other types of games this doesn't matter in, which is I suspect what they hope to be their target markets. Is something like GTA or Red Dead Redemption really that dependent on a gamer mouse, keyboard and g-sync monitor running at 120fps? I doubt it.

There is noticeable lag just playing a SNES emulator on a Raspberry Pi with RetroPie, but not something you can't adjust to.

Yeah... physics. You are limited by the speed of light, you'd be amazed how much lag gets introduced just by the tech in your home, let alone a router and internet connection.

There is a way to get close to zero lag but it's very quantum and very billions of pounds of tech away. :/

I was surprised by how bad that video made it look.

when I used OnLive a few times the experience was generally very good, admittedly I was playing single player games (Warhammer 40k, one of the batman games, a few other things) so wasn't worried about ping times and being fragged by some-one in another time zone as I was still mid jump ;)

There's a PlayStation game streaming service as well, I think that's supposed to be pretty good as well.

maybe google forgot to buy that reviewer, unlike this one, I guess ymmv ;)

just heard a guy in the offiec talking about it - sounds just like my experience of onlive

there's a game he has on pc, and using  stadia on pc - the pc version looked much better but stadia played fine

downstairs on tv it looked good, and still played fine

he had seen the video above, and he was surprised as he didn't have those problems, and says he doesn't have super fast broadband.

The reason it doesn't look as good is the last point - he doesn't have super fast broadband.. 30 or so Meg and it can get to 4k. And depending on the speed fluctuations resolution can change too. There will of course be 'horror stories' but the tech can only get better..
As above I think the pricing model will be what holds it back once the early adopters are all on board.
