[VIDEO] Nintendo Switch announced

Interesting, looks like a tablet with a docking station, which has clip on handle controllers, designed to take gaming with you.

It's also a bit odd, dumping Nintendo's traditional split of home and portable devices for a unified device. This is either a decision of the utmost genius, or the dumbest thing Nintendo have done since the VirtualBoy.

Mind you, I still want a VirtualBoy. :)

It's been an open secret for quite some time that it would be a portable/console hybrid - this was the first time the look has been shown.
Personally, I don't think it will be a success - it doesn't seem to know what it is.  The idea of playing games while you're out and continuing on the TV is good but I just feel it will be underpowered again and fail..

I agree, it doesn't seem to be a great home console, and too big to go portable. They should have gone with a service architecture, nice fast compact console at home, separate one like the DS which was portable, and one unified account that you downloaded software from.

Buy once, play on any Nintendo device.

It's that NVidia Pascal Tegra chip that worries me. It's a tablet chip. Doesn't sound powerful enough for the "home console".

They say it is equally as powerful as the PS4 and Xbox One and can handle ports from their games, but as those two franchises are planning their next consoles to be released (next year?), Nintendo are stuck behind them as usual.

So, no motion control any more, and possibly not even a touch screen. HDMI but no 4K upscaling. Amiibo compatibility OF COURSE as that has saved their business from going down the tube!

I will be buying one. I love Nintendo games. But I just wish they could get ahead for once!

Still alive and kicking. You can't get rid of me that easily!

My understanding is that main guts of the console are in the Base unit and it streams over WiFi to the portable unit the same way the Nvidia Shield does. It's the only thing that makes sense if it's going to be running ports of Xbone/PS4 games.

Not sure about that. I think the guts are in the detachable display part (it can be played away from home - don't forget it's a 3DS replacement too). The bit connected to the tv will allow for extra storage maybe but essentially AV and network connections. IMHO.

I agree with Ste. The bit that stays at home appears to simply be a charging dock with av connections. It might have added storage - but they haven't even mentioned storage yet. God, please let this thing have more than 32 gigs!!!

Just watched this again - and I'm more and more excited by it.  The whole concept looks amazing and the ability to carry on playing games when out and about or even in bed will be brilliant.
Looking forward to it.
It's exactly the thing the Wii U should have been.
I suppose it all depends on costs but I'm wondering if maybe there is some sort of 'boost' when it's docked?  Full power (1080P, not 4K) when docked but maybe dropping to 720P when mobile (to save power).
Nice to see cartridges again - and the console looks really impressive.
Really need more info on power, battery life etc.
