who is Razer?

The company is in talks with Razer, the computer and accessories maker popular with gamers. The deal is not yet finalized, a person familiar with the matter has said, but the companies are discussing ways to bring Ouya's staff onboard.

Ouya buyout confirmed, as CEO leaves company

Android-based game platform Ouya has been acquired by video game hardware company Razer.

The acquisition comes after months of rumors of an Ouya buyout. Unconfirmed reports of an Ouya-Razer deal emerged last month, not long after China’s Alibaba announced a $10 million investment into Ouya.

Yeah I bought one as a step-up from the original Raspberry Pi. Just wanted a better emulation box, and found it to be a pretty decent games console despite the negative reaction on "hardcore" gaming sites. Ended up buying quite a few games on it. :)

I'm a bit gutted by the recent news tbh. I would have been happy with the buyout but the new buyers are saying stuff about a 12 month transition to get existing Ouya gamers onto Razer systems. For me, this is fine, but they have now 12 months to prove to me they are a viable option in the long term. There's simply no way I'd spend money on any other DRM-based store in the short term just to find myself again regretting it all over again in 12 months if Razer fail.

Funny you should mention this. I've not put mine on in ages but bobbed it on for some lols last week. It still works! I know it's not a popular opinion but I cannot for the life of me fathom why this suffered so much negativity. It's got a lovely user interface and some fun games, and you can sideload other stuff too. I have quite a lot installed on mine from the Ouya store and also apk's like Vice City, Sonic etc. The D-pad isn't the best but it's doable and the controller generally is OK.

For a tenner it's not bad as the servers are actually still up at the moment. How long for we don't know, but for a tenner - even if you just stick Retroarch on it there's value to be had.

Shame it failed. Perhaps if it had a Nintendo badge the story may have been different.
