Frontier Developments have announced a kickstarter campaign for Elite 4, which is now called Elite Dangerous.

There are rewards for pledging, with the highest amount being £5000, which nabs you dinner with David Braben and key team members and a central star system named after you. Two people have already pledged that much :o

It`s clash of the titans! It`s old skool vs really old skool! It`s UK vs USA!

Because in the states, Wing Commander is doing the same kickstarter thing. :)

On a related note, I`ve been trying a few of the classic Elite versions. At the time I had it on the BBC first, and until recently I`d have said that was the definitive version, despite having also played it on the Amiga and Spectrum.

But now, I`m firmly in the Archimedes camp! It has all the feel of the BBC version but with better graphics, no annoying music, and lots of space battles that go on about you as you approach planets. Just feels more alive than the Beeb one.

No, you are just doing a nice thing to get it off the ground, and bragging rights for those stupid enough to pay the £5000. There are other levels of recognition you can get from Elite such as having a galaxy named after you or something like that if you contribute so much, and access to the testing stages.
