Caught this last night at the Imax, and it's very much a Ronseal movie, but as such, it can seem like something that was written as a 25-minute short stretched out to nearly 2 hours, but don't let that put you off, this is a thoroughly enjoyable movie.

The premise is exactly as shown in the trailer. Immensely wealthy family are held hostage in the matriarch's palatial house, with John Leguizamo after the several million dollars being stashed in the vault below. The only thing in their way is a disgruntled but actual Santa Claus and a precocious 10 year old who's been watching Home Alone on repeat.

The deeper plot is a recently separated couple take their daughter along for the annual get-together at the home of his terrible mother, where they meet his terrible sister, brainless boyfriend and stereotypical teenage son. Once the not-so-pleasantries are out of the way, a little Hallmark Christmas Special seeps into the narrative, and all the little girl wants for Christmas is for her parents to get back together. Then all hell breaks loose in a flurry of sledgehammers, billiard balls in a rugby sock, up-ended lawnmowers, semi-automatic machine guns and booby-traps Culkin would be proud of.

You remember those videos that pop every now and again that have some kind of medical professional detailing the actual injuries sustained by Harry & Marv in the aforementioned Home Alone movies? Imagine that premise, coupled with the plot (and noticeable musical cues) of Die Hards 1 & 2, and you've got this movie.

It's ridiculous and overblown. The violence & gore is so over-done it teeters into the realms of the ludicrous and both myself and everyone in the cinema was loving it. To try to add some credence as to why loveable old Saint Nick would have such a predilection for random outbursts of horrific violence, we're given small flashbacks to a past, more barbaric life, but they don't focus on that too much. It IS a fun festive frolic for all the family, after all.

9/10. It loses a point for the terrible geographic claims made in the first scene. I don't know who they're trying to kid, but that really ain't Bristol.

I have to say that was by far the most enjoyable movie of the year for me, an absolute delight starting on 34th street and ending on 34th street via nagatomi towers, bad Santa, reservoir dogs, Thor  and home alone, the violence was extraordinary in light of the switching from classic Christmas movies to seriously blood and guts and the cast seemingly enjoying the OTT nature of the movie and the ridiculous premise that let them run amok but the thing that made it for me was the music which was so so wrong it was perfect, an absolute treat and I honestly think it could be a future Christmas classic in the making

Saw this too - and agree it was great fun.
It may become a bit of a cult classic but was faaaaaaaar too violent to be a mainstream one.  There was more than one time when I thought 'Surely not!' and yes, they did!
The attic scenes certainly make Home Alone's traps seem like paper cuts in comparison 😂
And yeah, what was the point of the 'Bristol' setting for the opening - not a Bristolian accent anywhere and it wasn't related to anything else I noticed.
