Bad Boys 4 Life

Apart from title recognition, I knew very little about this film as publicity round these parts has been a bit thin on the ground. But reports have been favourable, so I popped out last night and gave it a go.

Have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. If this had been a Michael Bay flick I wouldn't have bothered (his next film with Ryan Reynolds looks like hot garbage), and while his name isn't under the Director's headings, the guys in charge have been gently respectful to the source material without going completely balls-to-the-wall insane. Ok, the weaponised sidecar is a bit far fetched, but overall the movie's surprisingly grounded. Bay's touches can be seen here and there, but not enough to ruin the film a la BB2.

The cast does well. Will Smith is, well, Will Smith, and Martin Lawrence isn't as embarrassing as the trailer would have made you think. He's older, overweight, and in no shape to be emulating the Marcus Burnett of the previous two films, and the film knows that and uses it to great effect. The trailer did fill me with a little trepidation as it honestly looked like the movie was partly made to give Lawrence a paycheque, but they both slip back into the familiar parts quickly.

I would recommend. 8/10.

(If you're wondering where you've seen the big blonde bloke before, he was Cato in The Hunger Games)

If you are referring to 6 Underground on Netflix, it is pretty much unwatchable.

Also kinda make me think a little less of Reynolds. Given his passion for certain recent projects (Deadpool & Detective Pikachu - no, really, it's not bad), falling into the Bay bunch really is a creative step backwards
