Just got back and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not T2 fantastic, but a worthy successor. Despite asking the audience to accept an incredible leap of faith, that answers Rob's quesion above. Big, big spoiler below
SPOILER:
There was more than one Terminator sent back, and are continually being sent back years apart. One such Terminator caught up with Sarah & John a year after the events of T2 and, not knowing that its mission was over, killed John anyway.
Fast forward to today, and the Terminator, the unstoppable killing machine, just managed to grow a conscience. That's it, apparently. No-one cut his head open and flipped the switch that enabled him to learn, a la T2's deleted scene, he just started to learn about humanity, got himself a girlfriend and a kid (not his) and lived out his days in a log cabin after taking up interior designing and adopting the name Carl.
I'm not kidding.
Still, the action is on a par with T2, the new, non-Skynet terminator is a much more formidable foe than Robert Patrick's shiny blob, and Mackenzie Davis is well cast as Grace, an augmented human with future diabetes. Plus, Linda Hamilton is still believeable as a complete hard-ass, despite looking like everyone's p***ed-off grandma.
