2001: The Extended Edition?

Jitendar Canth (Reviewer) posted this on Monday, 20th December 2010, 17:13

Apparently 17 minutes of extra footage has been found, preserved in perfect condition.

Double dip time?

Somehow I doubt an extended edition would be what Kubrick wanted.

Buggeration! I just bought the Blu-Ray!!!

No, I don`t think this would tempt me. I love it as it is, and I feel sure if Kubrick had ever wanted to extend it, he would have done so during his lifetime.

I suppose it depends what the 17 mins consists of.
If it`s 17 mins of Leonard Rossiters Russian I think I`ll pass.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

ISTR there was a "roadshow" version of 2001 put together with a preamble interviewing famous scientists or something.  Pretty sure the Kubrick estate won`t greenlight an "extended" cut but wouldn`t be surprised if there isn`t a definitive edition including all the material as extras on the cards.

According to Bill Hunt at the Digital Bits (and Wikipedia), the scenes director Stanley Kubrick cut before the film`s original theatrical release included footage of a schoolroom painting class on the moon base, additional scenes of life on the base, Dr. Floyd buying a bush baby from a department store via videophone for his daughter, more scenes of daily life on the Discovery, additional space walks, astronaut Bowman retrieving a spare part from an octagonal corridor, a number of cuts from the Poole murder sequence including the entire space walk preparation and shots of HAL turning off radio contact with Poole, a close-up shot of Bowman picking up a slipper during his walk in the alien room and a 10-minute black-and-white opening sequence featuring interviews with actual scientists (including Freeman Dyson) discussing extraterrestrial life.

They`re going on in the article as if there`s a mystery why the film was in a Kansas salt mine, and apparently the footage is in excellent condition.  Bloody well should be.  Warner have been storing a great deal of their irreplacable original materials down there for decades.  It`s one of the best film storage facilities on the planet - dry atmosphere, cool constant temperature and an environment that`s actually hostile to things that might affect negatives like mould.

I doubt the Kubrick estate has any say so on most of Kubricks films except as a courtesy from Warner.
They didn`t waste time after Kubricks death releasing A Clockwork Orange in the UK when he had specified no UK screenings for more than 25 years.

Warner have apparently stated they do not intend to release the original cut as it was first presented by Kubrick before he changed his mind.
But if they try and sell a new Bluray which is the same as the one we have now except for 17 minutes of deleted scenes I don`t think the sales figures will be anywhere near as impressive as a new Bluray that holds 2 versions of the film.

Give buyers the choice .
Deleted scenes out of context are boring as hell so keep the shorter version for purists and new cut with the scenes reinserted into the movie where they were in the first place.

How many will double dip for some deleted scenes?
Not as many as will for a new version

And I thank them for that! But your point is taken. :/

Stop giving them ideas. :(

But they could always do it via the usual seamless branching routes, that way we can pick what we want. Personally I find 2001 more than long enough without dragging it out even further.

This does remind me I should watch it again, haven`t seen it in quite a while!
