VCD`s.....are they any good?

Ascomdog (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 20th January 2002, 14:44

I have no VCD`s at the present moment. What I want to know is, are they worth buying?

I realise that DVD quality is far superior, but sometimes I`ve seen VCD`s of films that are hard to come by.

Thanks.

They can be a little better than the best vhs picture.
I have around 5 original vcds. Quality is variable.
Best I`ve seen is CTHD which I got over 8 months before dvd release.
Beware many vcds are pirates and regardless of your ethical position quality can be poor.

I bought a few and as far as I can see they are very poor compared with dvd`s especially picture wise. Much better to wait for DVD of the film and they are often down to £10 or less on Play 427 etc. Also most VCD`s are accross two or even more discs,
Add to that many dvd`s have nice logo etc on the disc and nice packaging.
I suppose if you had a mate who can get them for a £1 or £2 it might be worth it for the odd film you aren`t too bothered about, but beyond that they aren`t up to much as far as I can see.
Best Mark.

Cheers.

I don`t think I`ll bother taking the risk now.

Thanks for your help!

Woah - don`t discount VCDs that easily... Although they`re no where as near a quality on a par with DVDs they are watchable, BUT!!!! only buy official titles, these are infinetly better than VHS and yes there are some rarities out there (especially if ur into horror flicks)

I`m an avid supporter of VCD - I buy VCDz of films I want but don`t want to pay the expense of a DVD. I`d rather pay £5 for an official vcd of an older title than get an expensive new DVD of same...

I`ve now got over 200 VCDs compared to only 100 or so DVDs - although I`ve had a VCD Player since the days of the Philips CDi.

If you wanna check out VCDz go to any of these sites:

http://www.videocds.com (Malaysian VCDs, w/no subtitles)
http://www.yesasia.com (Chinese VCDs, usually have subs)

VCD`s are crap, pure and simple, DVD`s from Hong Kong the lowest priced (and there are plenty there) only cost me HK$48 = approx £4.80, not bad.

They may not be up to much, but VCD`s aren`t all that bad. Had Monsters Inc for a little while now (it`s ace) and the quality of that isn`t too bad.

I like VCD`s, download music video`s the odd film and burn, and enjoy, can`t do that with anything else!

DVD and VCD`s love them both!

the only problem I have is that they usually span 2 discs.

However, the quality can be very good. and hard to find titls (esp. HK ones) are available on VCD
e.g Drunken Master 2 in original language, uncut, 2.35:1

my Gen-Y cops vcd is superb!

don`t discount them, but only go for them if they are dirt cheap or the only option.

Took the kids to see Monsters Inc last weekend. They thought it was brilliant.

I`ve had a look on various VCD sites, but no-one seems to have it. Can`t wait until September for the DVD release !

Does anyone know of a site to buy this ?
