it really is a top class disc...apart from the fact that it disables the languages during the film.

The picture was generally brilliant, but the audio was incredible!!!

Crank up your amp, and listen to the podrace sequence. Best DVD experience yet!

So did you go for the Region 2 release knowing it was cut?

On region 2 its got someone swearing cut out on the extras .. on region 1 its got it beeped out ... hardly wrist slashing eh... i`d sooner have the better picture on the film.. region 2 is loads better from what ive read( which is the reason we buy them ??) than some guy swearing for 5 seconds which is still beeped out anyway ... thats my opinion anyway

Mr Boiled,

Can you explain why the picture is better on the r2? After very close scrutiny of both discs on my nifty set up, it seems there is absolutely no difference whatsoever. With a poor video connection its possible to see the horizontal scan lines(only just!), but in these days of progressive scan and 100hz, ntsc is no longer the bum deal. Even if you don`t have progressive or 100hz, the images are practically identical.
On both versions, the grain and nasty edge enhancement remain in all their ugliness.

I agree Westy, I find no difference between region 1 & 2 on my 100hz Sony Haute Couture TV. I think the DVD is a bargain at under £13.00 delivered although it is from DVDIMPORT.

I have the region 1 and have compared it to the region 2 and apart from alot of swearing on the r1 disc there appears to be no difference although i think the region 1 has the edge regarding picture quality

On the AVS forums and Home theatre forum they have been discussing the DVD and LD versions of the phantom Menace. The LD wins on sound. The DVD`s db level is way to low. This DVD will not become a demo disc to show off to your friends. I think Superman SE holds that rank.

Having seen the film at the cinema, then buying it on video (prior to owning dvd) and finally on dvd i`ve noticed that each successive release has been "lucasised" so that it differs from it`s previous incarnation, as have and I suppose will, all the rest of the star wars episodes. I can only watch region 2 so cannot comment on the merits of the different regional versions, but I enjoyed the film for what it was, an outstanding audio experience that i can watch repeatedly without it degrading (dvd of cause)and a "bit of fun" as well. just as an after thought apart from the thx setup and demo section is there any thing else hidden on either of these two discs?
