I got three DVD`s in Great Yarmouth (Norfolk UK) Pound store -
"His Girl Friday" with Cary Grant
"Abraham Lincoln" (D W Griffith`s)
"Horror Hotel" with Christopher Lee

All the DVD are Region 0 & say

Quote :
"Warning : The copyright owner has licensed this film on this DVD for home use only"
but if they are, then not going to put in on the box ?

There is a BBFC rating, so it look quite real.

I have also got old movie on DVD with Classic Entertainment, they have three movies on each DVD, I also got them from Poundland / 99p store, Norwich
(but I have seen them for £4:95 from play.com, I think as well).

But I did have a look for "His Girl Friday" on play.com & they DVD was Columbia Classics range for £7:99.
With Abraham Lincoln, again it look nothing like the 23rd Century copy, but could not see the company name.
With "Horror Hotel", I found it, on a three movie DVD with The Terror & The Corpse Vanishes by Classic Entertainment for £4:99.

Show how easy it is to get a copy DVD`s, but I still do not know if these are bad copy`s.
On Amazon, I found other copy of His Girl Friday by Columbia Tri-Star Home Video, Waterfall Home Ent. Int. Ltd , Imc Vision Ltd, Elstree Hill Entertainment , Delta Music Plc , Stonevision Entertainment ?
Is each of these companies licensed to make DVD`s copy of this movie ?

How can any one tell a licensed DVD from a fake unlicensed one ?

All legitimate copies of movies that are either in the public domain or readily licensable.

If it`s got a BBFC rating on it, it`s legal because selling videos or DVDs without one is a criminal offence under VERA84. You won`t find dodgy product in a proper shop (rather than on a market stall) because the risk of being collared by FACT, the local Tradings Standards or just the Bill are too high, as is passing off a recording as having a BBFC certificate when it hasn`t got one.

I`m presuming they`re legal because the titles are PD and you bought them through a shop. If that Pound store was selling dodgy discs, even at budget prices, where would the profit be in that? The titles we`re talking about wouldn`t exactly fly off the shelves. Pirates will always go for the sure-sell, the latest movies before the legitimate copies come out, and try to convince you they are legitimate copies imported from the Far East. Discs carrying BBFC logos should be 100% legal, but if you`re buying something from a potentially less-than-legitimate source (market trader, bloke in pub, asylum seeker), you should be wary.

If you`re suspicious, look at the packaging. Is it properly printed or does it look slightly fuzzy? Is it in a proper case or a card sleeve? When you turn the disc over, is it blue or purple on the data side? What are the subtitles in - Malaysian?

The Beyond, Bucket of Blood and other pictures are readily available through very legitimate outlets if you`re arsed to do a search of them.

Try looking on the BBFC website for re-certification details on the 23rd Century releases - there are NONE!! Trust me, 23rd Century is a pirate outfit... they started out as 22nd Century, releasing VHS bootlegs on pressed DVDs with badly "scanned-from-VHS" covers with cut & paste BBFC certificates on them. They have only recently changed to 23rd Century, they originally still had the bad artwork but recently they have gone more upmarket with their covers. BUT THEY ARE STILL ARE GREY-MARKET COMPANY...

Good to get that input, Phil. It`s difficult keeping track of the legitimate companies in the DVD industry as so many of them are trading names for larger companies. I`m still curious how they expect to make a profit on ripping off PD titles which legitimate labels can`t give away. I`ll have a look for them on the Companies House website during office hours to see if I can find anything.

Some days I`m flabbergasted (and frequently delighted) by what some of these smaller legitimate labels release - stuff the Studios wouldn`t consider in a second, or at least they don`t until they find out how much a licensed title is selling. ;)

UPDATE: The Beyond is currently copyright to an Aberdeen firm called Protected Ltd., and Bucket Of Blood was copyright Classic Entertainment, but they were wound up in February (according to Companies House, but they`re still putting out discs today). The rights are now with Stax Entertainment and the movie`s been trimmed by six seconds although it says no cuts at the BBFC.

Hey,
The 23rd Century label do not put out pirate material, they just put out public domain films and pre-cut VHS rips that they can get the copyright too cheap. Anyone visiting their showroom will be able to see the copyright agreements that they have if you don`t believe me, however the copyrighted titles that they license only have a 2 year limit. I know all this as they have purchased a couple of cheapie adult titles off us and also a naturist documentary.

Their official trading name is Pacewest Ltd. And their showroom is:
Direct 2 U
57a Derby St, Manchester, M8 8HW
0161 832 7452

All the 23rd century DVDs are 65p each inc VAT.
Hope this information helps :-)
