George Lucas, has sharply criticized Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment`s decision to release two Three Stooges DVDs today (Tuesday) that will allow viewers to watch them in either their original black-and-white or digitally colored versions.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Lucas said, that the Stooges` slapstick comedy belongs in a black-and-white universe. "Would color distract from their comedy and make it not as funny anymore?"

Lucas said. "Maybe just the fact that they`re in black and white makes it funny, because their humor is dated. But by putting it in black and white, it puts it in a context where you can appreciate it for what it was. But you try to make it in full living color and try to compare it to a Jim Carrey movie, then it`s hard for young people to understand. ... It`s not fair to the artist."

In actual fact he is quite right. Back in the sixties they did a test on Carry On films. The public found that black and white ones were funnier (to the audience) than when they went colour. Colour, it seems, "slows down" the comedy (a psychological response, apparently).

Adding a load of rubbish CGI effects, on the other hand, enhances everyone`s enjoyment of classic 70s/80s films that originally featured awe-inspiring model shots.

Maybe "THE TRILOGY" would fare better in black and white - bear with me here......how much better would a load of (obviously) added SFX look without colour to make it look obvious?

at least Columbia Tristar have put the original black and white versions on the disc as well as the colourised ones. how clever of them, to put both the altered and original `visions` on the same disc. technology nowadays eh!

Hehe, we`ve been having a big fight about this on our forums. Quite a few people think that Lucas is within his rights to do what he want with his films. That`s as maybe, but should respect the fans and give us both versions and let us choose for ourselves.
