MVM Day 6

is the Mystery Bundle day.

Blu-ray £39.99
DVD £29.99

Five titles in each,  either complete or season 1s.

Anime Limited Day 6

The preorder today is the complete Kill La Kill £29.99

Previously released as three collector's editions and when those sold out, three standard releases, this is a Collector's Edition which has the whole kit and caboodle in one box (basically the 3 Amaray cases in a nice box). It's an entertaining blast of a show, wacky and daft with some seriously over the top characters and hyper energetic animation. It does for the magical girl genre what Gurren Lagann did for giant robots.

MVM Day 7

It's the early bird Redux. In the middle of this year, MVM started doing Early Bird special prices for their pre-releases, and today and tomorrow they are revisiting their 2020 releases at Early Bird prices, which means some titles from the first half of 2020 get those reductions too for the for the first time.

Accel World Blu-ray £29.99
Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day Blu-ray £23.99
Bloom Into You Blu-ray £23.99
Cells at Work! Blu-ray £23.99
Devils' Line Blu-ray £23.99
Domestic Girlfriend Blu-ray £23.99
Fate/Stay Night Heaven's Feel II. Lost Butterfly Blu-ray £14.99 DVD £11.99
Fate/Zero Blu-ray £41.99 DVD £29.99
The Girl in Twilight Blu-ray £23.99
Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl Blu-ray £23.99
Initial D Legend Theatrical Collection Blu-ray £23.99
Kizumonogatari Part 2: Nekketsu Blu-ray £14.99
Kizumonogatari Part 3: Reiketsu Blu-ray £14.99
Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse Blu-ray £29.99
Mysteria Friends Collector's Blu-ray £29.99
Nobunaga the Fool Blu-ray £29.99
O Maidens In Your Savage Season Blu-ray £23.99
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai Collector's Blu-ray £41.99 Standard Blu-ray £23.99
Revue Starlight Collector's Blu-ray £47.99
Toradora! Collector's Blu-ray £35.99

There is a whole lot of good stuff today, especially if you're an anime fan whose got some experience. A couple of the recent Monogatari movies, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai and Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl, Bloom Into You, and the Girl in Twilight are all great shows if you're familiar with the tropes and shorthand of anine. I also notice that the Initial D BD collection is present that I was wondering about 2 days go.

But if you're a newcomer to anime and want to see something special, a show that even a non-anime fan might like, then there are quite a few to be had today as well.

Cells at Work is a brilliant sbow. It reimagines the human body as a world, where the cells are inhabitants, and it goes about explaining how the body functions using these characters, the blood cells and the platelets, the antibodies, dealing with infections and heatstroke, injury and illness. There's even an episode with a coronavirus!

Anohana is a look at loss and grief, and how children deal with it. Funny and moving, it's really well done.

Fate/Zero is the prequel to a long running series of videogame adaptaions called Fate/Stay Night, but Fate/Zero transcends that with peerless storytelling and characterisation, easily the best in its series.

Then there is Toradora, which may just be my favourite anime romantic comedy. An obnoxious looking but sweethearted guy is in love with a girl who happens to be best friends with a cute girl with an obnoxious personality, who's in love with the first guy's best friend. They decide to help each other with their respective crushes, but things don't quite go to plan.

Anime Limited Day Seven

Today's pre-release bargain is Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online - Blu-ray Complete Series Collection £29.99

Previously released in two parts, this is the one bit of the Sword Art Online franchise that I actually like. It's one of those stories where people have adventures in VR games (and wind up getting trapped in them in some cases). It's really well done, and quite entertaining. Most importantly it avoids the nastiness of the rest of the SAO franchise.

MVM Day Eight

is the same ad Day Seven, another 24 hours to get those early birds...

Anime Limited Day Eight

The new pre-order is Erased Complete Collection £29.99.

It's an Aniplex show so it's pricy, but it is a pretty well done sci-fi time travel mystery. Worth a look, but no Steins;Gate

STARMYU Season 1 Blu-ray £9.99
Tsuritama DVD £7.99

There is a whole lot of good in this batch, some bad, and a couple of downright ugly titles in this batch, and all have been reviewed on this site if you want to find out more. But continuing my intention of recommending anime titles for people who've never countenanced anime before...

I love the Eccentric Family. There is a rich line in folklore and the supernatural in Japanese culture, and this show looks at some of those myth in a modern vernacular, with the life and politics of a family of shape-shifting tanuki and a clan of goblins co-existing in the modern human world, and the antics that occur.

The Flowers of Evil is unlike any other anime. It's animation rotoscoped over live action, used to tell a very teenage drama. As the title suggests, it goes to some really dark places and challenges the viewer. I liked it so much that I wound up importing the now deleted Blu-ray, but this DVD release is also very good.

Kill Me Baby is hilarious. It's a wacky comedy about a school girl who wants to be friends with the girl who sits next to her, who just happens to be a child assassin, and who reacts with lethal force to any friendly overture. Throw in a ninja as well, and a surreal, cutesy animation style and I laugh more at this show that most other anime comedies.

Tsuritama is a show about fishing... with aliens. If that is as weird as it sounds, it actually gets weirder. An alien comes to Earth to go line fishing in the ocean, only he needs help from the locals, and winds up making friends with a local boy who's into fishing, a socially awkward transfer student, and an Indian secret agent with a pet duck. It's such a fantastic show that, you've guessed it, I wound up importing the Blu-ray, but once again, the UK DVD is good enough

All the Anime Day Nine

Today's preorder is Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory: Blu-ray + Audio Dramas Collector's Edition  £34.99

This is the recently made fourth season in the Full Metal Panic series, following the original, the Fumoffu spin-off, and The Second Raid. I haven't seen Invisible Victory, but I do recall enjoying the first three seasons. As mentioned, this contains the Audio dramas on disc  with subtitle translation which is exclusive to this release.

MVM Day Ten

All that was on sale yesterday is still on sale, and MVM have added the following anime titles.

Kabukimonogatari DVD £2.99
Hanamonogatari DVD £2.99
The Asterisk War Part 1 Blu-ray £14.99 DVD £9.99
The Asterisk War Part 2 Blu-ray £14.99 DVD £9.99
Eromanga Sensei Part 1 Blu-ray £11.99
Eromanga Sensei Part 2 Blu-ray £11.99
Girlish Number Blu-ray £9.99 DVD £5.99
GOD EATER Part 1 Blu-ray £11.99 DVD £7.99
GOD EATER Part 2 Blu-ray £11.99 DVD £7.99
Granblue Fantasy the Animation Part 1 Blu-ray £11.99
Granblue Fantasy the Animation Part 2 Blu-ray £11.99
Heaven's Lost Property Season 1 DVD £7.99
Norn9 Blu-ray £9.99 DVD £6.99
Nurse Witch Komugi R Blu-ray £9.99 DVD £4.99
Record of Grancrest War Part 1 Blu-ray £14.99
Record of Grancrest War Part 2 Blu-ray £14.99

There are some good titles in there, but none that I'd really recommend to non-anime fans, although once you get past the tropes, Girlish Number does deliver a cynical look at the anime industry that is quite charming. Blu-ray only on that one though, as the DVD's a mess.

MVM also stuck most of their live action titles into the mix

252: Sign of Life £1.99
Bangkok Assassins £4.99
Blood £1.99
Death Game £1.99
Gallants £1.99
Geisha Assassin £1.99
High Kickers £4.99
Ikigami: Death Notice £1.49
My Ex £1.99
My Ex 2: Haunted Lover £1.99
Ninja Battle £1.99
Ninja Girl £1.99
Rogue Ninja £1.99
Samurai Warrior £1.99
Samurai Zombie £1.99
Sinking of Japan £1.99
The House £1.99
The Kick £4.99
The Victim £1.99
Wushu £4.99

Haven't seen them all but the two best here for anime fans are Death Game and Ikigami: Death Notice, the former the kind of thing for fans of Danganronpa and Mirai Nikki and the like, while Ikigami is an adaptation of a rather quirky dark manga, both are reviewed on this site. If you like cheesy disaster movies then 252: Sign of Life and Sinking of Japan are great choices, and the ouvre of Seiji Chiba, the cult schlock period action movie can't be discounted for a post pub, lager and kebab laugh. Rogue Ninja, Ninja Battle, Ninja Girl  are all a great deal of fun. Just a shame MVM didn't release Alien vs. Ninja! And while Chiba didn't make Samurai Warrior, it's cut from the same cloth.

EDIT: And Geisha Assassin is worth having for just how cultishly bad it is.

Anime Limited Day Ten

Today's pre-order discount is for Children of the Sea BD.DVD Collector's Edition £19.99

Again, I know nothing about this film, so here's a trailer

MVM Day Eleven acually saw no change, just the same titles on sale as yesterday, minus Gallants, Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks Part 2 and Initial D: Legend 3 which have sold out.

Anime Limited Day Eleven

adds K: Season 1 Collector's Edition Blu-ray pre-order to the mix for £34.99

This was originally released in the UK as a standard Blu-ray and DVD by Kaze, and as per their normal modus operandi, quickly went out of print. So by the time Anime Limited licensed and released the rest of the K franchise, the second season and the movie, the first season was infuriatingly hard to find for collectors. This release remedies that.

If anime music is your thing, then the Attack on Titan Season 2 soundtracks are now up for pre-order, two flavours of vinyl, and CD as well.

MVM Day 12 is once again the same as the previous two days. On the bright side, nothing else has sold out in the last 24 hours. If you're wondering why MVM didn't have more surprises for the final few days, you can thank Covid for that, as it's harder to get i's dotted and t's crossed when communications are compromised.

Anime Limited went the other way at it, putting everything on sale on day 1, announcing ahead of time what the pre-orders would be for the twelve days, and leaving the only surprise the order that they went live. That and a couple of vinyl pre-orders that they hadn't mentioned.

I can tell you ahead of time that Anime Limited Day 12 will be Millennium Actress UHD/BD Collector's Edition £24.99.

I have been so looking forward to this one. This is the last Satoshi Kon movie to get a UK HD release, and the first to get a UHD release, albeit SDR. Originally released here by Manga on DVD, it's another stunning story from Kon about a documentarian looking for an interview with a reclusive actress, and getting drawn into the story of her life in the most fantastic way. Like any Kon movie, this is a blind buy guarantee. You will love this film. On the day of release, there will be a standard stand-alone Blu-ray release, already up for pre-order on MVM's site, Anime On Line, but for me, even with the superfluous (for me) UHD, I'm going for the CE.

Also, while the sale ends on Sunday 13th, the pre-orders will stay live on the Anime Limited site till Friday 18th.
