Claire Marrable (Geraldine Page), a very polite and well-bred widow, has trouble keeping housekeepers. Five have vanished, each with no close relatives and with a substantial savings account. With each disappearance, a young pine tree has been planted in the Marrable garden.

Alice Dimmock (Ruth Gordon) has decided to accept the position as Mrs. Marrable`s new housekeeper because she wants to learn what happened to her dear friend and predecessor, Miss Tinsley (Mildred Dunnock). Slowly, Alice begins to suspect that Mrs. M. is killing her housekeepers, so she and her nephew set out on a mission to find out... a mission that could prove to be very dangerous...
