Review for WWE Survivor Series 2012

8 / 10

Survivor Series is traditional one of the big four PPVs of the WWE. Recently, it has been treated like to quote good ol JR 'a government mule'. The main concept, was that 'teams of five, strive to survive'. There would be teams that would fight it out in elimination style tag matches. For a tag team fan like myself it was a dream. However, over the years this emphasis has disappeared with most events having one or two 'traditional' survivor series matches amidst the usual array of matches. This one sadly is just that.

However, that is not to say it is a bad PPV, it's not, but it's certainly not the 'must see' PPV that it once was. Featuring six matches, including two 'traditional' matches it certainly had some high and low points.

The two Survivor Series matches were interesting, despite the fact only one of them made sense. Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara were joined by Brodus Clay, Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd against a team lead by the Prime Time Players, Tensai, Primo and Epico. This was a nice match given just the right amount of time to allow everyone involved to get some action in. The match made sense and the set up and execution was perfect. It was certainly a great way to start the show.

The second Survivor Series match featured Team Ziggler of Dolph Ziggler, Damien Sandow, David Otunga and Wade Barrett against Team Foley (Yes Mick Foley) consisting of The Miz, Kofi Kingston, Team Hell No (Kane and Daniel Bryan) and Randy Orton. This match was a mess and I think the reason was that I didn't care about anyone on Team Ziggler's team. True, they are the Heels and so I'm probably not supposed to, but still it made for a very difficult match to get into. The fact that Foley was not involved in the rng was also very disappointing.

The two lesser belts (US between Antonio Cesaro and R-Truth and Divas between Eve and Kaitlyn) were so utterly pointless that there was very little reason in them being there. Would it have been so hard to have had a Divas' Survivor Series match? As for the US match? It was just too short to make me care about anything.

However, the two World Title matches were actually not that bad. Big Show vs. Sheamus was a nice, brutal match that I have come to expect from these two and though it could have been run-of-the-hill it was pretty exciting. CM Punk, John Cena and Ryback in a Triple Threat had all the makings of an awful match. If I'm honest, that's all I expected it to be. Instead it was given enough time to mean something and all three looked like they could win at any point... until the shocking ending that is.

Survivor Series 2012 is a PPV that could have been great and if they had tweaked the Foley/Ziggler match and eliminated or done more with the lesser belts it would have been. Instead it was a good PPV, certainly one worth watching, but you could certainly survive if you didn't have it.
