I`ve just watched the extended version of this movie.
The additional eight minutes blended seamlessly into the narrative, unfortunately, those eight minutes seem utterly pointless. They add nothing to the story, the tension or the sfx.
Having said all that, the theatrical release is still an enjoyable film, and some of the extras are interesting.
I think the package would be better on a single disc with a cheaper asking price.

This is a fab all action Sci-fi flick despite it`s far fetched and weak plot. BUT shame about the playback quality of this R2 DVD! While the extra features are good and abundant, there are a few scenes that are of "Standards Conversion"quality (blurred motion, poor colour, sound etc). I loved this movie when it came out in 1996, but I was so disappointed about it not being THX mastered that I returned it and bought a Region 1 copy over the internet. I do recommend that anyone in the Region 2 area (UK, Europe & Japan) who felt the same to do what I did. I also hope that Fox Home Video take notice and make amends by releasing the proper (THX mastered) version. Strange considering that at the same time when this R2 disc was released in the UK, THE ABYSS (SPECIAL EDITION) was THX mastered.
WHAT A BLOODY SHAME THAT A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY FOR ID4 WAS WASTED WITH THIS DVD!

This DVD set is fantastic. The movie is about Aliens coming to Earth and they hover over all of the biggest cities in the world in ships 15 miles wide. The movie is full of action between the humans and aliens and at the end the humans come out on top and defeat the aliens. The best thing about the DVD is that you can watch the normal version of Independence day or you can watch the Special Edition of the movie which is a fully uncut version of the movie and it is great. There is a director`s commentary and There is a second disc with a whole lot of extra features on it and on both discs the menus are great. The aliens blow up the White House when you press play! This set deserves a full 10/10.
