Review for WWE Tagged Classics: Capital Carnage and No Mercy

9 / 10

This set is not only for UK fans, but really for all the fans who got caught up with the whole Attitude era of WWE between 1997 and 1999. This was the era of Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Mr. McMahon and I think we can say that was 99.9% of us caught up in this. This set includes the two UK-only PPVs from 1998 and 1999 and both are just as good as any of the PPVs from around this time.
Capital Carnage includes an awesome fatal fourway between Austin, Kane, Mankind and Undertaker, The Rock vs. X-Pac, and also the infamous topless Jacqueline incident that no doubt will be played on repeat for a while. Granted there is some bad stuff here including LOD 2000 (Yes, the Droz version), Val Venis, Tiger Ali Singh, Mark Henry and Steve Blackman, but it is still a great PPV and certainly an entertaining one.
No Mercy is possibly one of the best PPVs of 1999, certainly the best event ever held in the UK. Again, this was the era of Stone Cold and before the likes of John Cena and Randy Orton were in EVERY main event again and again. This event is even better than the last and could be worth purchasing alone and though like the previous one there is some bad stuff like Steve Blackman, Mideon, Nicole Bass it isn't as bad as the last one and even these guys put on a good enough match. One of the highlights, just for perverse sakes, is the Gillberg (a spoof of WCW's Goldberg) taking on Tiger Ali Singh. It is utterly ridiculous, but it is meant to be and I can accept that. The two highlights from this event were Shane McMahon vs. X-Pac and again an awesome main event of a Triple Threat match between Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H and The Undertaker which was possibly one of the best matches of the year and a classic example of a wonderfully booked triple threat match with all three getting in the offence and looking like they could win.
Both shows are great examples of one-off PPVs and I do wish WWE would do these more often as these are both wonderful to watch, even if you weren't there for the actual event.
