Great one liners - not enough chill!

    8 / 10

I enjoyed this book, more for its sharp one liners, than for Connolly's menacing and chilling atmosphere of previous books.

For example: 'He (The Priest) had studied at an Orthodox seminary for 3 years before discovering his true vocation, which lay primarily in providing the kinds of services for which priests are usually required to offer forgiveness.'

The story is about survival but delves into the past and reveals much about the relationship between Louis and Angel - characters often brought into support Private Eye Charlie Parker in earlier novels -  they are portrayed as helpful, even friendly, assassins with none of the menace and chill that surround Connolly' villains of other books. Tension and excitement and pace there were, but the element of unknown evil seemed to be missing.
