Review for WWE Battleground 2014

10 / 10

Battleground is one of the best PPVs I have seen for a long time. Top to bottom (one match aside) this was perfect to watch. The Main event saw a perfect Fatal Fourway between John Cena, Randy Orton, Kane and Roman Reigns for Cena's WWE World Heavyweight Championship. But this was just the icing on a perfect PPV cake. There are only six matches and usually that's when I complain of the lack of wrestling, but each match (apart from one) was given enough time for them to mean something and that's what made it better.

WWE Tag Championship is a 2 out of 3 falls match between The Usos and The Wyatts. The match itself is as good as any these two teams have had, but I don't think the stipulation worked. The match felt a little too slow and it didn't feel like the match got started until after the first fall. However, once it does it is an amazing match with some great moments from both teams and they are given the time for the match mean something.

Divas Championship match between AJ Lee and Paige is actually a pretty good match. I have been saying for a while that AJ needed someone good to work with and Paige is certainly that wrestler. This was a pretty competitive match and not just an excuse to look at the Divas.

And now I come to my one issue with the PPV. What can I say that I haven't said before about Rusev and Lana? I get it. They are Heels, they want us to hate them, but seriously how far will they take this? The worst thing is that when it comes to the match between him and Jack Swagger? I don't care. It was a boring, lumbering match and did nothing to entertain me or want to see Swagger beat him or for Rusev to be beaten.

Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins was a match that didn't happen. Instead it was just a series of attacks by Ambrose which is not as entertaining or exciting as they thought. It more raised the question of if he was thrown out of the building by security: How did he get back in later on?

The match between Bray Wyatt and Chris Jericho is actually much better than I expected. I don't know why, but I expected it to be a little slow and boring. Instead there was a lot of excitement and moments with the ending very unexpected. Great match from both and shows just how good both are.

Intercontinental Championship Battle Royal was a good way to see everyone who are usually left off the PPV. Like most battle royals this had all the typical moments such as the mass doubleteaming to eliminate the biggest opponent. There are no big surprises though Kofi Kingston's amazing escape that he always does is as amazing as always. The winner was a typical thing, but I can't argue with that.

In the main event we had a wonderful WWE World Heavyweight Championship Fatal Fourway match between John Cena vs. Randy Orton vs. Roman Reigns vs. Kane. This is a match that should have been just like every multi-man matches, but the dynamic of the four in the ring really helped. It seems like a natural that Kane/Orton would work together and Cena/Reigns would too. That is true to some extent, but when the alliances began disintegrating was when this match really started going.

The match is full of amazing moments and the superplex/powerbomb combination was insane. Seeing Cena and Reigns going at it makes me feel that WWE really should give him a try in the main event and not just as a 'also starring' role that he's currently in. This match was a great way to end the PPV and the outcome I had no problem with, which is always a good sign.

The Bluray comes with a lot of extra footage which is almost as good as what is on the PPV.

There are two Kickoff matches featuring Adam Rose vs. Fandango and Naomi vs. Cameron, which are fine, but nothing special. From Battleground we get interviews with The Usos, Miz and John Cena which are typical and what you expect from them, though having no reaction from The Authority is a shame.

From the Raw/Smackdown's leading up to Battleground. Oddly though, only two matches are featured from any of the shows which are another Divas match between AJ Lee and Cameron which isn't quite as good, but not unwatchable. There is also an almost PPV quality 3 on 2 tag match featuring John Cena and Roman Reigns against Randy Orton, Kane and Seth Rollins. This match is great and really did set the scene for the Battleground match.

We also have John Cena revealing the cover to the WWE 2K15 game, Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter giving a message to Rusev and Lana, Jericho disrupting Miz's return to Raw which is great as is Bray Wyatt's taunting of Y2J. Roman is Raw is a nice moment that really shows how popular he is becoming. Dean Ambrose's taunt to Seth Rollins was typical, but I understand them including it. Paul Heyman taking to Triple H and Stephanie about Plan 'C' is odd, but in hindsight maybe it should have been Plan 'L' as for Ric Flair choosing his winner for the Fatal Fourway, I could see a better use for the Hall of Famer's time.

If I ignore the Rusev nonsense, I would say that this is the best PPV I have seen for a long time. I watched this and for once did not have my finger over the FF button. I sat and enjoyed every match and even the Rusev match at least I still got to enjoy looking at Lana. The Tag Match is probably the best I have seen in a long time, Jericho and Wyatt was a great match, the Divas Match was perfect, the Battle royal was a nice touch and the main event was hugely enjoyable.
