    Review of Phantasm 2

    5 / 10

    Introduction

The sequel to 1979’s horror hit “Phantasm” is set 10 years after the original and sees the welcome return of “The Tall Man” (Angus Scrimm), his strange gnomes and lethal silver balls. Our two heroes from the previous outing, Mike (now played by James LeGros) and Reggie (Reggie Bannister) return once more (after a spot of psychiatry) to join forces to finally track down and rid the world of the manic morgue mortician. This time, however, there is the added complication of a beautiful girl that starts appearing in Mike`s dreams. He assumes that she`s in danger and needs their help. So they decide to travel to the girl’s hometown, picking up a hitchhiker on the way. Together, they join forces to try and defeat the lanky mortician before he completely wipes out the whole town.

Will they rescue her in time? Will “The Tall Man” claim another victim? And will the plot be an improvement on the first film?

    Video

The 1.33 full screen picture is pretty similar to the first film in relation to the quality of the image, with some degree of grain and noise visible on the transfer. Again, the colours are well transferred and the contrast levels are good. Not reference material by any means, but adequate nonetheless.

    Audio

The DD2.0 audio is good with clear vocals to accompany the gore-fest on screen. The music soundtrack isn’t quite as good as the first film’s unfortunately, lacking some of the camp stereotypical horror-piano music. That said, it is perfectly adequate given the subject matter.

    Features

There are some added features, but unfortunately (like the original Phantasm) are pretty throwaway. Alongside the usual scene access, there is a Fangoria special TV feature focussing on Angus Scrimm (aka The Tall Man) that is good while it lasts. There’s also an interview with Angus where he shares some of his thoughts on the movie and reminisces on the film’s production. We are also treated to some US TV spots, a collection of smallish screenshots and a theatrical trailer.

    Conclusion

Nothing new here really except for the silver balls that have received a refit and now are equipped with laser beams, drills and other Black & Decker style attachments. The Tall Man looks as sinister as ever and is played with great feeling by Angus. He can really scowl with the best of them.

Phantasm II is an average sequel that adds nothing to the original and although it can never match the original for atmosphere and impact, it’s a fun couple of hours. It comes recommended if you loved the first film.
