    Review of Evil Cult, The

    3 / 10

    Introduction

    "He won`t pull any shunt"

Yes, this review is also going to be peppered with bad translations from the film`s subtitles as they are truly the high point of this "adventurous journey".

The plot, erm, yes, erm. There`s some people, and they fight other people, and they fight some other people, and there are some swords and shields, and a man in a stone and some magic. This film is weird and it`s quite difficult to follow what`s going on.

    Video

"Remember, don`t ever trust any woman"

Well, you do get an anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer, but its very dirty, covered with dust and scratches and marks. They sometimes get a bit distracting too.

It seems that not a lot of effort went into this transfer, and perhaps that echoes the special effects used in the film, as they are pretty ropey, you can spot quite a few wires and the fake blood looks quite unrealistic at times.

    Audio

"I will let you sell you how powerful my sword is"

The original stereo cantonese soundtrack is included and this is okay, nothing to get your system worked up into a sweat though. A dubbed track is included on the trailer and this sounds naff. I prefer the "original language track with subtitles" approach adopted here.

    Features

"Are you having any weapon with you?"

    "No"

"Why do I feel something solid pointing at me?"

(perhaps those lines were written by Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson)

As for extras there`s the trailer, some stills from the film and some cast and crew bios. Nothing to get excited about.

    Conclusion

"When you are exhausted you will be in deep s*** tool"

This film is not very good. The plot is a joke, the transfer is dirty and horrible. Yes, the subtitles are often amusing, but that doesn`t compensate enough.

The body count is pretty high, there are plenty of fights, but they`re not very good. There`s some crazy wire stuff (these people don`t need planes, they just fly), some weird magical swords, an Indiana Jones type bit and some poisons and potions. And as for the ending........

If every other DVD is out at your local rental place and you desparately need to see a film, then this might just raise a few smiles, but otherwise avoid, as it`s just not worth the effort.
