Review of Family Guy Season 1

    9 / 10

    Introduction

Family Guy. Better than the Simpsons or a shameful rip off of a winning idea? That`s for the individual to decide, but for me, family Guy in it`s unedited form is much much funnier.

Those who have seen family Guy on UK television have not seen the real Family Guy. So many of the good jokes and lines are taken away as the powers that be deem it too adult for general viewing.

To a point that is true, but it loses so much when these bits are taken away. This is why this DVD set can do so much to keep Family Guy alive over here. These episodes are uncut and shown in their original, funnier form.

    Enjoy!

    Video

The picture is full frame and nice and crisp, as you would expect from new animation. One problem I do have is that at times it looks as though the picture has been freeze framed and jagged lines appear. This happens in a few episodes and is not something that is evident on the TV broadcast episodes.

The colours are sharp, but not vibrant. They have a softness that makes it very watchable for a long period without being a pain on the eyes.

I could detect no evidence of noise or dirt on the print.

    Audio

When this set first appeared stated that this was a 5.1 soundtrack. It wasn`t. It was a 2.0 soundtrack.

On my later edition this has been changed to correctly reflect the actual mix.

The sound is very good when mixed to Pro-Logic by the amp. 5.1would have been nice, but this series was made for television, not cinema, so the extra budget was probably not available.

    Features

    Absolutely nothing. Never mind.

    Conclusion

Family Guy is fighting a battle in the USA for survival. There are equal numbers of people who love and hate it. Unfortunately, the versions that are shown in the UK will not extend its life span.

Some of the later episodes, such as those from Series 4, are exceptional in their use of humour.

Lets hope that this edition is followed by more, as this really is humour at it`s best.
