    Review of Nurse Betty

    8 / 10

    Introduction

A very, very, very surreal black comedy is all I can say to sum up Nurse Betty. But in some bizarre way it works and works well. It isn`t full of laugh-out-loud gags and has no real comedy talent to note, I include Chris Rock in this statement. Nurse Betty gets its laughs from the subtle changes, from harsh realistic violence to the down rite dizziness of Betty.

    Video

The scored, static menus are a nicely done and the movie is Presented in anamorphic widescreen. Colours are vivid and the picture pin sharp. There is some macro blocking on large areas of the same colour but it`s not annoyingly noticeable. Contrast is above average with some blacks leaning towards the grey side when they definitely should be black.

    Audio

The 5.1 mix is strident with good use of the split rears for ambient sounds in bars or out on the streets. It`s no demo disc though.

    Features

Cast biographies, a brief making of documentary and trailers are the lame bits. The nifty little extras that sets this disc above others is the addition of six stand alone mini soap opera episodes taken from the movie, very cheesy and very funny. There are also some deleted scenes that actually add to the movie and should have been left intact.

    Conclusion

Again, bizarre and surreal. All the way through I couldn`t help saying to myself what the hell is going on. But again, it worked and was very entertaining and original. The disc is above average in all departments apart from the extras where it falls a little short of the mark.
