Review of Gone in 60 Seconds

    8 / 10

    Introduction

Hollywood brings us car porn. Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie team up to steal cars for the cliched English villain played by Christopher Eccleston. Delroy Lindo is the man tasked with stopping the thefts. The film is loosely based on the 1974 film of the same name, which is now 30 years old. But apart from the stealing of cars, that`s largely where the similarity ends.

When you watch a music DVD, you look at the list of tracks. As you`re watching a film all about cars, here`s a list of what you might see:-

    Aston Martin DB7
    Bentley Arnage
    Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
    Ferrari 355 F1
    Aston Martin DB1
    Jaguar XJ 220
    Porsche 996
    Ferrari 265 GTB4
    Shelby AC Cobra
    Ferrari 550 Maranello
    Jaguar XK8 Coupe
    Mercedes Benz SL 600
    Porsche 911 Twin Turbo
    Shelby Mustang GT 500
    Ferrari Testarosa

    Video

An excellent 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer greets you on this disc. The print is free from blemishes, with excellent colours and everything looks pin sharp.

This of course all means that you get a good look at all of those lovely cars as they glint and gleam, roar around the city and are whisked away from under their owners` noses. Car porn for the eyes.

    Audio

A high octane DD5.1 soundtrack to match up with the high octane action on the screen. Plenty of surround effects, lots of bass and of course the seductive purring and roaring of some rather sexy engines. Car porn for the ears.

    Features

A little selection of featurettes is tucked away in the extras section here, and they go into various levels of detail about the making of the film and how it all came together. There are also interviews with various crew members and cast.

There`s also a music video and a trailer.

    Conclusion

A guilty pleasure. It`s not the greatest film in the world. It doesn`t tax the brain. But it does entertain the eyes and ears, particularly for anyone who likes cars. There`s plenty of action happening up on screen, including the obligatory car chases (you`d feel cheated if a film about stealing cars didn`t have one!) Yes, the plot is riddled with holes, and the characters are very flat and empty. But it`s just a lot of fun at the end of the day.

Car porn at its best, and much better than the bling bling fest that is The Fast and The Furious. Recommended as a "good clean fun" film.
