Review for WWE Payback 2016

7 / 10

WWE Payback 2016 is a strange PPV. After everything that happened at Wrestlemania, I expected this event to have more of a point to it. Instead it just felt like any other PPV. The build of AJ Styles was fantastic and this should have been WWE righting the wrong which was giving Reigns the belt when no one wanted it. With only six matches (not including the Kickoff matches) this just did not feel like a PPV that WWE put a lot of effort into.

Matches:
Enzo Ambrose and Colin Cassady vs. The Vaudevillains
Shame the match ended as it did with the injury to Enzo. The match should have been a great look at the future of the tag division, but sadly it was cut short.

Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens
Spotfest. This was a good match, but after seeing so many moves mean absolutely nothing you do wonder who booked this? The fact it was supposed to be Zayn getting payback on Owens the outcome didn't make any sense either.

Intercontinental Championship
The Miz vs. Cesaro
Despite the bizarre Kevin Owens commentary, this was a pretty good match. Lots of back and forth between the two and that is always great to see. Cesaro was very impressive and seeing Maryse is always a highlight.

Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho
The day Jericho retires will be the day we will miss people putting on matches like this. I love how well he works with the younger talent and even though it is a very basic match, but the moves all made sense and wasn't just a spotfest. I enjoyed this match more than most of the matches on the card.

Women's Championship
Charlotte vs. Natalya
A good match, though not a great match and the ending was stupid. Shame.

World Heavyweight Championship
Roman Reigns vs. A J Styles
This match could have been a classic, but just felt like too many cooks spoil the broth. The first ending was so stupid that I don't know why they bothered as the whole crowd would have rioted if it had ended that way. The second ending was again pointless too? The interferences could have been handled better too.

The match itself was good with some great moments from both. You can tell that the crowd absolutely hate Roman Reigns and yet WWE still refuse to hear that. Once again we see a crowd who simply don't care about their champion. The ending was nothing. No one cared and sadly the fact they book a rematch for Extreme Rules immediately shows how much they know (I hope) how much they messed up again.

Payback was an average PPV. Nothing was spectacular. The main event could have been an amazing match, but insteaf with all the interferences it became a mess. Match of the night was obviously Dean Ambrose and Jericho, but not much else was of much note or worth watching again.
