Review for WWE Survivor Series 2013

7 / 10

Survivor Series used to be a PPV that meant to mean something. As one of the original Big Four WWE PPVs there was (for a time) a feeling that this event meant something. One of the reasons was that it was essentially a series of four/five-man elimination tag matches with Heels against Faces. In this event groups would combine to show a sign of strength or to show support for a certain person.

However, the Survivor Series PPV is now just one of the many PPVs that WWE does. It is very rare that they include any 'Traditional Survivor Series' matches and even when they do it is almost like a token reminder that WWE have remembered what the PPV used to be. If I'm honest I would love if just one year they went back to the old way and only featured these matches. It will never happen, but with the PPV losing its special quality it would be nice if they tried it.

Survivor Series Match
Rey Mysterio, Cody Rhodes, Goldust and The Usos vs. The Shield and The Real Americans
I expected this to be a throwaway match, but it is possibly one of the best examples of this type of match I have seen in years. Sad thing is if Cena had been in this, it would have been the main event and I would have been happy with that. Everyone put on a great performance and the 'twerking' by Zeb Colter was classic!

Intercontinental Championship
Curtis Axel vs. Big E. Langston
This match existed. That's really all I have to say. Axel and Langston worked well together and the match was fine, but it was nothing special.

Survivor Series Match
Natalya, Brie Bella, Nikki Bella, Naomi, Cameron, Jojo and Eva Marie vs. AJ Lee, Tamina Snuka, Rosa Mendes, Summer Rae, Alicia Fox, Aksana and Kaitlyn
This match was worth it just for the AJ Lee 'inspiration speech' and also for the fact that you will probably not see this many hot divas in one place at the same time. Of course I will say that it is technically painful to watch, but really we are not watching it to see them wrestle. That being said, it was still an entertaining match to some extent and certainly some great moments. Funnily enough this match won 'worst worked match' from the Wrestling Observer for 2013, but really what could you expect? Sure the match was bad from a 'wrestling' point of view, but really would you expect anything else?

Ryback vs. Mark Henry
This was an awkward and pointless match. If WWE needed more time for the show more of the Divas celebrating or the Legends talking would have been better. It seemed so stupid to have people like Bret Hart, Mick Foley and Booker T on hand and not use them for more than a few minutes?

World Heavyweight Championship
John Cena v.s Alberto Del Rio
An ok match, but nothing special. This is the kind of match that needed some kind of a stipulation to make me care about it, otherwise it's just like any other match. But at least they knew that the only way I would ever cheer Cena would be if he was against Alberto Del Rio.

CM Punk and Daniel Bryan vs. Luke Harper and Erick Rowan
A team made in heaven. This is the kind of tag team I wish would always be in existence. Punk and Bryan are wonderful as a team, a bit like Christopher Daniels and AJ Styles in TNA. The Wyatts are just great as characters and almost like a throwback to the old days of Bruiser Brody mixed with a crazy 'Manson-like' creepiness. This is simply match of the night and it's again sad to say if Punk or Bryan had been champion it could have been an amazing main event, as it is, it is an amazing match to steal the show.

WWE Championship
Big Show vs. Randy Orton
This match was bizarre because of all the 'Please make my match fair' from Orton throughout the show. The weird thing about it is I can sum what's wrong with this match in two words: Fifteen Minutes. That is how long this match is. Remember, this is the main event, the WWE Championship match. Again I am reminded of the pointless Henry/Ryback match and think what where they thinking? Unless you are going to do an Ultimate Warrior-type surprise victory there is never any reason why a MAIN EVENT should be less than twenty minutes. Despite not having the title, maybe they should have put Punk/Bryan and the Wyatts in the main event, not this match which I would be disappointed on Raw never mind on PPV. Awful!

Special features includes Kickoff Match between The Miz and Kofi Kingston which is fine, nothing special, but fine. There is also a confrontation between Orton and Big Show from Smackdown and Orton's reaction to the PPV. These are all fine, again nothing special, but at least WWE are trying.

Survivor Series 2013 was almost a perfect PPV. With seven matches there are only two that are unwatchable. The two 'traditional' matches are great and it is a sad day when the Divas match was longer and more entertaining than the supposed main event? Match of the night is tied between the other Survivor series match and the Punk/Bryan vs. Wyatts match which were both great. It would have been nice to have had a few more extras, but what is given is fine and it is certainly an enjoyable PPV if you have't seen it.
