Yasujirō Ozu's Floating Weeds comes to Blu-ray and DVD this December

    Inline Image
More classic cinema to bring you news of, this time from Japanese master Yasujirō Ozu, who towards the end of his career, returns to a story he had made some 25 years earlier as a silent feature. Ukigusa monogatari aka A Story of Floating Weeds, for a magnificent colour reworking, photographed by legendary cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa.

Released by Eureka Entertainment on 3rd December, Floating Weeds stars Chishū Ryū, Machiko Kyō, Haruko Sugimura, Ganjirō Nakamura and Hiroshi Kawaguchi.

Exclusively restored and presented in the film's original aspect ratio at 1080p on the Blu-ray, it includes newly translated optional English subtitles, original Japanese theatrical trailer, plus an illustrated booklet featuring the words of Ozu and rare archival imagery.

The recommended retail price will be £17.36 for the DVD and £20.42 for the dual format edition that includes the Blu-ray.

    Synopsis and trailer follow...

When a travelling theatre troupe brings their show to a seaside port, Komajurō, an ageing actor, is reunited with his former lover, sake bar owner Oyoshi, and his illegitimate son Kiyoshi, to the distress of his current mistress Sumiko.

From this simple scenario, Ozu builds, one exquisite image at a time, a saga of profound humanity and rich understanding. Encompassing a novelistic range of emotions and tones with the utmost delicacy, Floating Weeds stands tall even amidst a body of work as extraordinary as Ozu's.
