Anime Review Roundup

Straight into the reviews this week, and just the one anime review to be conveyed. It was a whole heap of nostalgia for me, as I got another chance to watch Black Lagoon: Series 1, this time on Blu-ray! It was a short lived release in the UK way back when, courtesy of MVM, curtailed by licensor problems in the US, and quite a few people missed out on its unique charms. It's an action show set in the South Seas in the mid-nineties, where a salaryman winds up as part of a band of pirates operating in the region. Its nutty action calls to mind over the top eighties action movies, but it has some serious character development as well. That coupled with some awesome animation from Madhouse, and a refreshing lack of moe, makes this one of the best series in recent years. Check out the review to see if the Blu-ray is worth it.

There was a live action movie reviewed that might be of interested to anime fans. Mitsuko Delivers is a quirky comedy about a young pregnant woman who goes back to the town where she spent her childhood, and finds that she has some work to do to bring back the community that she so fell in love with. Mitsuko Delivers stars Riisa Naka, who you may recognise from the Time Traveller movie released by Manga Entertainment last year. She also provided voices for The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and the Summer Wars anime features.

The Blu-ray of Black Lagoon: Season 1 will be released by Manga Entertainment, although it has been delayed to the 30th of July. You can pick up the DVD release of the complete Black Lagoon Series today though. Third Window Films release Mitsuko Delivers today.
