Review for The Ultimate Fighter Season 10 : Heavyweights

6 / 10

The Ultimate Fighter 10: The Heavyweights is the first Heavyweight version of the show since the second season. The rumour is that this show was created specifically for the Internet legend Kimbo Slice and you can understand why. At 6ft, 3 and 230lbs just looking at him and you can see that he is the very definition of the term 'baddass'.

It's a shame that this series doesn't really do the man justice as it feels almost like his 'Last chance' at becoming a UFC fighter. He only appears in two fights, but one of them has possibly one of the best MMA moments I have ever seen.

This season sees former Light Heavyweight Champions Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson mentor a team against 'Sugar' Rashad Evans. It seems odd that for a season focused on Heavyweights to have that both mentors are considered Light Heavyweight competitors. Although Evans did make his debut in UFC by winning the previous Heavyweights season of The Ultimate Fighter 2.

As with all the Ultimate Fighter seasons I do wish that they would create a 'Best Moments' and edit this down to a two or three hour disk as at almost twelve hours there is simply just too much going on. There is a reason why X-Factor and other reality shows do not release boxsets of their shows is that they know it simply doesn't work.

However a 'Best of' or 'Highlights' from a season is perfect. That is what this show needed as I found I was fastforwarding through a lot of the episodes trying to get to the next fight or action... or indeed the next segment featuring Kimbo Slice. However, if you are a UFC fan (and really you would have to be to buy this) then this is probably a dream come true with everything here from all of the episodes and the FInale from the Palms.

Fights are a mixbag throughout the season with some very good and some just simply forgettable. The Finale is a pretty solid card with a great fight from Roy Nelson against Brendan Schaub. Though the most amazing moment was Kimbo Slice's insane back suplex on Houston Alexander. This move was on my a-b repeat for a long while afterwards.

The Ultimate Fighter Season 10: Heavyweights is an odd set as always. If you are a fan of UFC you will love the fact that everything is included and some of the training and mentoring sections are fairly interesting. However, if you are just a casual fan then you may find this is a little too much overkill. As I keep saying, if this was a 'Highlights' set then it may have been more enjoyable, but there is still plenty of stuff here to enjoy.
