Review for WWE Summerslam 2010

7 / 10

Summerslam is WWE's second biggest PPV of the year, but based on this package you wouldn't think it. Unlike Wrestlemania which usually receives a three disk set, this DVD is a little lacking in the extras department (unless you purchased the two disk Blu-ray), but I'll come to that in a second. The PPV itself was actually well booked with all of the matches on the card having great feuds built into them and the main event featuring Nexus was one of the best storylines of 2010.

WWE Intercontinental Championship Match
Dolph Ziggler vs. Kofi Kingston

If it wasn't for the ending this would have been a great match. It's sad that Kofi hasn't got back the position he built during 2009, but he is still a great entertainer. As for Dolph, teaming with Vicky Guerrero is genius as she is a human heat generator and has worked wonders for him. Again, the match is great and though the ending was spoilt a bit I understand why they did it.

WWE Divas Championship
Alicia Fox vs. Melina

I don't know what to say about this match. Probably the only bad match of the night, but in terms of a 'diva' match it wasn't too bad. Alicia and Melina worked well together and it was great to see Melina's entrance again, though in this PG WWE it isn't as fabulous as it has been.

3-on-1 Handicap Match
The Big Show vs. The Straight Edge Society

Watching this match it baffles my mind that WWE disbanded The Straight Edge Society as it was such a great stable. With the firing of Serena and Luke Gallows it's not something they can go back to, but it was certainly great while it lasted. Their feud against Big Show was pretty good and this match was just perfect at showing Show's dominance and the heel tactics of CM Punk.

WWE Championship Match
Sheamus vs. Randy Orton

This was a great match. But in a way it was a little too much like every other match either of them have been in. Sheamus is having an amazing first full year in the WWE and he will no doubt build on this in the years to come. At times I wonder why they ever turned Randy Orton face as he is simply too great a heel for this to work. However, the match worked and the ending was just great.

World Heavyweight Championsip Match
Kane vs. Rey Mysterio

If you had told me a year ago that Kane would be champion, I would have laughed. If you had said he would be credible champion, I would have laughed even harder. But here we are in 2010 thirteen since the debut of Kane and he is better than ever. This match was amazing. It is never actually explained whether it is a casket match or not, but that doesn't matter. In some ways the match is secondary to what happens after and I must say it is a wonderful example of storylines in wrestling. Perfect.

7-on-7 Elimination Tag Team Match
Team WWE vs. The Nexus

I don't want to spoil the surprise, but WWE's surprise member was a shock. And not a bad one either. His appearance and performance showed just how good this guy is and will be if WWE continue to push with him. This elimination match should have been saved for the Survivor Series PPV, but is still a great match. It's amazing that the members of Nexus who a year before were still training were now headlining this kind of PPV and they proved that they should be in the ring with the likes of John Cena and Chris Jericho. At times the match degenerated into chaos, but it helped with the storyline that went in and it is certainly one of the best matches of the year.

Unless you bought the Blu-ray version which included a lot of promos and extra matches you will have to make do with one extra. It is just a brief interview with the surprise member of Team WWE and isn't exactly the most probing (or indeed interesting) and is sadly all that is on offer for DVD owners.

Summerslam 2010 is a great PPV with only one match that isn't worth watching. Both title matches are given the time to show that they mean something and even the Intercontinental belt was made to look like it meant something for once. The Nexus storyline that is still ongoing is almost as good as WCW's nWo storyline and we shall see whether it is actually carries on having the same impact. It's just a shame that the extras on the DVD don't reflect how good this PPV was. However, if you want to watch some great matches and certainly one of the best PPVs of the year this is the one to get.
