Review for WWE Royal Rumble 2010

9 / 10

I love the Royal Rumble. I do. It doesn't matter how crappy the storylines are in WWE, I can guarantee one match where I can just sit for an hour and enjoy it. This year? I'm not so sure. I think the problem I have with this year's Rumble is hype. Hype can ruin things sometimes and this year the hype was:

HBK IS GOING TO WIN AND CHALLENGE TAKER TO A REMATCH AT WRESTLEMANIA.

It was my pick, so I fell for this too. I mean it seemed such an easy thing to call. BUT... who's to say Undertaker would be champion at Wrestlemania? We still have a PPV and two months of TV time for that? But still the Rumble was better than most of the matches of the past six months combined.

ECW Championship

Christian vs. Ezekiel Jackson

I never realized just how much Jackson looks like Bad News Brown and I keep expecting him to bust out his Ghetto blaster finisher. This was a much better match than I expected. It's nice to see Christian not face Regal for once!

US Title

The Miz vs. MVP

This was a nice bonus, as I didn't even know this was going to be on, though Drew McIntyre must be kicking himself that he never got a match. I enjoyed this match and I like the feud these two are having. Can't quite tell if they are trying to turn MVP heel (he was always a much better heel anyway) but the ending of the match was pretty good and set up what happened in the Rumble later perfectly.

WWE Championship

Shamus vs. Randy Orton

Ok, wake me up when this is over. Surely this could be a good match. I mean the title's on the line and this is Shamus's first big defence (as far as I can tell). But No! This match was horrible, dull, slow, boring and my head just hurt watching that ending. I couldn't quite tell whether to feel cheated that it ended in a DQ or just be thankful that it was all over.

WWE Women's Championship

Michelle McCool vs. Mickie James

It's so sad that this match didn't get the time it deserved, but unlike Orton/Shamus that seemed to go on forever, this match was short and sweet and far more satisfying. I hated this storyline, but I'm glad it ended this way, anything else and I wouldn't be surprised if Mickie would be asking for her release shortly after.

World Heavyweight Championship

The Undertaker vs. Rey Mysterio

This match proves beyond a shadow of a doubt, Mysterio doesn't need the belt and in the land of the giants he simply cannot hold this belt. On ECW? Sure he could defend against those guys, on the other two shows Mysterio as the World Champion feels a little bit like a joke. This is not to say that this wasn't a good match, it was and there was a lot more back and forth than I expected. But and this is a big BUT Mysterio didn't need this shot, this shot didn't mean anything to Taker or to Mysterio. This should have gone to someone else. Have Morrison fight Undertaker or someone else who could get a rub off of facing against him. He doesn't even have to win, just take Taker through a 10-15 minute match, lose and then at the end have Taker hold up his arm in appreciation of the effort. That would make anyone a star. This is what made Jeff Hardy, Kurt Angle and many others. Mysterio didn't need this shot and it's time for WWE to realise that and start taking some risks. Face it. No one bought this PPV for the World Heavyweight Championship Match; we bought it for the Rumble!

Royal Rumble Match

I can't really go through the match without spoiling it; the ending was good, but also very predictable. This is a shame.

The inclusion of Bret Hart confronting Vince McMahon from the February 01, 2010 Raw was interesting, though I don't actually see what this had to do with the Rumble. They should have probably kept this as an extra for the Wrestlemania DVD to show the build up of the match. It's still a nice extra to have though.

Royal Rumble 2010 was an average PPV. The matches beforehand were ok and the Rumble consisted of one thought 'Michael Cole has talked about HBK so much he has to win'. Some Rumbles are surprises, this one was a little bit of a letdown, but it's still one of the best PPVs the WWE has. If they had got rid of the WWE Championship match and given the time to the other matches and given the World Championship shot to someone else this may have been a perfect PPV.
