Bon Jovi Live At Madison Square Garden

    8 / 10

Bon Jovi are one of the most successful rock bands of the past thirty years. Eleven albums of music, 120 million copies sold worldwide and more hits than even I could begin to list. This DVD was filmed during their world wide sell out Lost Highway tour. How successful was this tour? 2,157,675 people bought tickets to see the band play during it, grossing almost $227 million in ticket sales. So it's fair to say they are a popular band.

This show was filmed in a sold out Madison Square Garden, which is possibly one of the most famous venues in the world. Throughout the show you can tell that there is not one person in that crowd who doesn't know every single word that Jon Bon Jovi is going to sing. Because of this, there is a wonderful electricity during this concert that I don't think I've seen before and what makes it even more wonderful is that unlike some concerts in which you really need to be a die-hard fan to recognise them, this was almost a 'Greatest Hits' concert featuring classics such as Livin' on a Prayer, Always, Blaze of Glory, It's My Life amongst new singles from the Lost Highway album. One highlight is Jovi's rendition of Leonard Cohen's Halleujah, which echoed the heartfelt classic rendition by Jeff Buckley and such a great buffer before the amps get turned up to eleven for Wanted Dead or Alive and Livin' on a Prayer.

It is a shame that a document of such a successful tour is not accompanied by more extras. A behind the scenes, interviews with the band or even just a look at the band setting up and getting ready for the show would have been a welcome addition to the DVD. The fact there isn't even a subtitles options for those to have karaoke sessions to their favourite Bon Jovi song is also an oddly missed opportunity. Instead we are given three extra songs You Give Love A Bad Name, Runaway and Bed of Roses, but these three could have easily been added to the concert anyway and so the decision to include them as 'bonus songs' is a bizarre one.

Bon Jovi Live at Madison Square Garden is a band at their best and proof that even thirty-plus years on they can still rock an arena like they used to. A great selection of songs for fans and for those who only know the hits you won't feel at all out of depth with the set list on offer a great musical concert to experience.
