WWE Night of Champions 2009

8 / 10

2009 seems to be the year of the 'Stipulation PPV' and Night of the Champions is no different. Every match top to bottom has some title on the line and though we can debate on the importance of some titles, you have to stop and say if the WWE have decided to make this person a champion they should at least on one night prove why that is. What I do like about this PPV, is that some belts such as the Women's and even recently the ECW belt, which have been left off PPVs at least get a moment to shine.
First up, I have to advise you just to skip both women's matches unless you like looking at the Divas who do look pretty good here, but wrestling-wise? It's painful to watch and when you consider the talent that used to be in the WWE you wonder what happened. The tag match, which pitted Chris Jericho and a Mystery Partner against Legacy was great and showed not only just how good Jericho is in tag competition, but also how developed Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase have become in their role as heel and as a tag team. The three mid-level belts are good matches, but nothing to shout about with Tommy Dreamer and Christian for the ECW title a rather lacklustre affair, Rey Mysterio vs. Dolph Ziggler is fun, but not as good as most matches and only the US title match between Kofi Kingston, Primo, MVP, Carlito, Jack Swagger and The Miz proving that the midcard actually has some good wrestlers in it.
The  WWE Championship match between Randy Orton, John Cena and Triple H would have been fine if they hadn't kept hyping and going on about how this would be the greatest match of all time. With these three? Never going to happen. It's a good match, lots of back and forth, but to be honest I have seen these three fight in various combinations so often that by this time it was very, very predictable.
The World Championship match between CM Punk and Jeff Hardy is an amazing match and the main event that it should be. It was fast paced, lots of insane spots, lots of moments when you were sure it was all over and just great action. Possibly one of the best matches I have seen between these two and certainly proof that these two deserve to be in the main event scene.
Extras are not on the big side, but I have to commend WWE for FINALLY listening to me and not revealing to me who won by saying 'Josh Mathews interviews the Loser of the World Heavyweight Championship Match'. Bravo WWE! As much as it would have been nice to have some other interviews or extras, this is a great step in the right direction.
WWE Night of Champions 2009 is a good PPV and in 2009 I haven't been able to say that very often. Often people say that you can't create a feud just about a championship, this PPV proves without a shadow of a doubt that you can.
